J. E. LINES. Carriage-Top.
No. 213,513. Patented Mar. 25,1879.

WITNESSES INV N TOR W n /-v M ATTORNEY N. PEl'ERs. PHOTO-LITMOGRAFHER WASMNGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. LINES, OF HOMER, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO LAW- RENUE J. FITZGERALD, OF CORTLAND VILLAGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,513, dated March 25, 1879; application filed August 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. LINES, of the town of Homer, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of carriage-tops in which the canopy 0r roof has a wooden frame-work, or is made of other hard material; and the improvement consists in a detachable bent or framed rim, secured to the under side of the canopy-frame, for purposes hereinafter mentioned.
Figure 1 in the drawings is a plan view of the under side of the canopy-frame, with rim attached and Fig. 2, a'longitudinal sectional View.
A represents the canopy-frame, with watertable I); and 0 represents the detachable bent orframed rim. This rim is made of anyproper material, either wood or metal, and is secured at or near the edge of the canopy-frame upon the under side, and more properly, as shown in the drawings, close to the inside edge, of the Water-table b. It is secured either by bolts or screws, so as to be readily detached or replaced.
The advantages gained by this detachable rim consist in affording an easier mode of lining the canopy, a convenient attachment to which to secure the canopy standards and braces, and at the same time strengthening the canopy-frame and giving to it a neat and workmanlike appearance.
In the manufacture of the canopy the lining is spread or drawn across the under side of the frame, and the rim attached by means of bolts or screws passing through holes B in the top of the canopy-frame, thus securing the lining to the frame. The other and outside coverings are all put on afterward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the canopy-frame A, provided with the water-table b, of a bent rim, 0, adapted to be secured to the water-table, and to clamp and hold the canopy-lining in position, and form at the same time an attachment for the standards, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES E. LINES.
