YALANOB FOR CARRIAGE TOPS. APPLICATION FILED APB. 15,1902.

PATENT OF ICE.
ROBERTYC. SCHEMMEL, or UNION oI'r INDIANA.
VALANCE FOR CARRIAGE-TOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 732,589, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed April 15, 1908. Serial No. 152,707. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. SCHEMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valances for Carriage- Tops, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to Valances forearriage-tops, and has for its object to providev a valance comprising a body made up of two sections connected together at or adjacent to one longitudinal edge of the valance, the for.- ward of said sections being provided on its face with a rib designed to give a raised appearance to the valance-covering and the rear section being designed to be tacked. or otherwise attached to the front bar of a carriagetop without interfering with the rib on the front section.
With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken incon' nection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a valance constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention, the same being shown with portions of the cover and the front section of the body broken away to illustrate the tacks for attaching the rear section of the body to the front bow of a carriage-top. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, illustrating the valance as attached to the front bow of a carriage-top. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional perspective of the valance.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, re ferring to which- A is the front bow of a carriage-top; B, the rear section of the body of my improved valance; O, the front section of said body, and
D the covering, of patent-leather or other suitable material. The rear body-section B is preferably of textile material suitably stiffened, While the front section 0 is preferably of tough paper and is provided on its face or forward side with a rib a, preferably of pasteboard, attached-to it by adhesive, as shown, or other means. Said body-sections are connected together adjacent to the lower longitudinal edge of the valance, preferably by a seam b. The lower edge of the covering D is arranged in rear of and connected by adhesive or other means to the rear side of the body-section B, as indicated by c, and the covering is carried forwardly below the body and thence upwardly and is connected to the forward sides of the body-section O and its rib a by adhesive or other means. Said covering is also by preference connected to the body-sections O and B by a seam d, located immediately below the rib a.
To'attach my improved valance to a topbow A, the mechanic holds the valance, with the forward body-section Oresting away from the rear body-section B, and drives tacks E through the said body-section B and into the bow. From this it follows that the valance may be quickly and easily connected to a carriage-top bow without interfering with the rib a on the body-section G, and hence said rib may for the sake of cheapness and lightness be of pasteboard. Said rib may beformed of Wood instead of pasteboard when desired, since it is not engaged by and hence cannot be split by the tacks E.
It will be observed from the foregoing that the front section 0 of the valance is connected to the rear section 13 below the longitudinal median line of said sections alone, which adapts the front section to be bent away from the rear section to permit of tacks being readily driven through the latter and into the bow, also that the covering D, extending over the upper edges of the sections 0 B and the upper side of the bow, serves to hold the upper portions of the said sections together.
Notwithstanding its simplicity and cheapness it willbe observed that my improved valance is rich and ornamental in appearance and is susceptible of being expeditiously connected to a top-bow in a strong and durable manner, and this without the attaching be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of the front bow of a carriage-top,a valan ce-body comprising a rear section, and a front section; said sections being connected together below the longitudinal median line thereof, alone, tacks extending through the rear section of the valance-body and into the bow, and a covering secured between the lower portion of the valance-body and the bow, and extending up over the forward side of the body and over the upper edges of the sections thereof, and holding the upper portions of said sections.
2. The combination of the front bow of a carriage-top, a valance-body comprising a rear section, and a front section, provided, on its front side, with a longitudinal central rib; said sections being connected together below the rib of the front sect-ion, alone, tacks extending through the rear section of the valance-body and into the bow, and a covering secured between the lower portion of the valance-body and the bow, and extending up over the forward side of the body and over the upper edges of the sections thereof, and holding the upper portions of said sections.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT C. SCHEMMEL.
