Letters Patent No. 65,979,'dzrt'e41'Junc 18, 186-7.
IMPROVED ctornss nnrsn.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, Hoses WILLARD, or Vergennes in the county of Addison, and State of Vermont, have invented a new-and improved Clothes-Bar; and thet'the ollowing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I hate set forth the nature and principles of my saidimprovements, by which my invention'mny be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with su'ch parts as I claim, and desire to'huve secured to'm'e'by Letters Patent.
Thisiiivention relates to new and improved clothes-bnr for holdingclothesfor drying, and'is an improvement on a device'for a similar l purpose for which Letters Patent were granted toi'ne hearing date February 18, 1862. i
The original invention'has its bars applied to the bracket in such is rnann'erthat they can, when not desired for use, be folded npward'only, and thefwithin-doscribedinvention consists in applying the bars to the bracket in such a manner that they can befolded either upward or downward, als desired, end which is an improvement from the fact that in manyinstancesthe hers wheniblded 'upward are very inconvenient to reach. and, in that case, may be folded or turned downward. In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure his as plan or top view of my invention.

A rogir esentse bracket, which may be of the same form and construction as that shown and described in. my original Letters Patent, but instead of being secured permanently to a wall or fixture is provided with d dove-tail rib, a, to fit into a. eorrespondingsocket, 6, attachedtothe wall or other fixture, it being designed to have a, plurality'of sockets ncccnipnny each brgxcket,'so that the former may be secured in difi'srent places where the de dos may be required to be used, end the latter adjusted in any, these pieces. 3 represents the bars, which are designed to be of wood, the bracket being of" cast iron: These here, as hitherto, are supported by stirrups 0 cast with the bracket, each bar having enoblong staple, d., in;its nnder side, throngh which pins e at the feet or bottom of-the stirrnps pass. The stirrups extend downiobl-iquely or in: an inclined direction from the bracket to admit of the bars being folded upward or downward, upwardss' shown in red, anddown wurd as shown in blue in fig. 2, end the bars, when required for use, are held in a horizontal position by shovingthclr rear ends underneath the edge ofthc brackets. The oblong form of the staples dndnni'ts of this longitndinel adjustment of thebors B, and it is on important feature, as it enables the bars te'be adjusted inn pendent position. In the original-device the staples do not allow the bars to be udjnsted longitudinally in the stirrups, and hence the former hen only be folded upward, as shown in red.- The oblong steples, it will be seen, admit of" the bars B being drawn out so that then-inner ends will be free from the edge of the bracket, and th'e'bnrsmcy than be turned down.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- The securing of the clothes-bars B in thestirrups c of the bracket by moons of o'blong'staples d, or their equivalents, to admit of the longitudineladjustment of the bars in thc'stirrups, snbstantially'ns and for the purpose specified.
