Description
. K. PHT R,
Lap-uards- Patented June 17, 1873vr mi M AM. P/mroi/moGRAPH/c co. mman/ms Paname) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE K. PROGTOR, `OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAP-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,074., dated June 17, 1873 application filed March 26, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. PRocToR, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lap Boards; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings.
Under this invention the lap-board at each end is provided with a leg or support, both of which are hinged to the under side of the board, and constructed for adjustment as to their length or height, and to place the board at a more or less degree of inclination, as may be desired.
This construction of the legs also enables the legs to be compactly folded upon the board, and in being so folded also to be adjusted to serve as feet onwhich to stand or rest the board when not in use.
In addition to the above the lap-board is provided with a measuring-scale, and with a drawer or box'for the reception of needles,
scissors, Sac.
In the accompanying plate of drawings the present improvements in lap-boards are illustrated, Figure 1 being a front view with the board in position for use 5 Fig. 2, an end elevation; Fig. 3, a plan view; and Fig. 4, a view in elevation, showing the lap-board with its legs folded to serve as feet to sustain the board when not in use.
Ain the drawings represents a lap-board, made of the usual outline and of any desired material; B B, the supporting-legs, one at each end of the board, hinged, as shown at C in the drawings, Figs. l and 2, more particularly to the under side of the board. These legs B are both similarly constructed in three parts, D, E, and F; D, the part hinged, as stated, to the board; F, the feet; and E, the upright, connecting feet F to part D. The upright E is hung on a pivot, a, of the part D, concentric with which pivot a is a circular slot, b, in part D; c, a thumb-screw, entering upright F through circular slot b, and by this screw c, if the two parts D and E are swung one upon another, they can be set at a greater or lesser angle, relatively t0 each other, bringing and setting thereby the lap-board either to a level or to a corresponding degree of horizontal inclination. The feet F each have a vertical slot, through which passes a thumbscrew, f, entering the upright part E of the supports, and thus the supports or legs B can be adjust-ed as to height or length, giving the board a greater or lesser degree of elevation vertically. The upright part E is confined from-a lateral or side play on the feet F by the vertical side ribs g of the feet F at each side of the upright part E. G, hooks hung to under side of board A, and in position for being hooked in the eyes h of the supports B to fasten the supports in their vertical position, as shown; H, a scale suitable for measuring lengths, arranged upon the upper surface of the lap-board; I, a box for the reception of needles, scissors, &c. This box is secured to under side of lap-board, which has an opening for entering the box I; K, a cover for closing openingJ; and m, a button having operatinghead n to secure the cover K in place, the cover at each end resting on a shoulder, o, of the box and between its ends, fastened from escape by the overlap of the button ends p at each side of the box.
A lap-board, supported on legs B B, constructed substantially as herein described, obviously can be adjusted as to height and inclination, plainly advantageous in its use, and, in addition, by proper manipulation and adjustment of the legs upon the board, they can serve as feet on which to stand or rest the board when not in use. (See Fig. 4.)
vHaving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. .The supporting-legs B, hinged to the lapboard and provided with adjusting devices, constructed substantially as described, for the adjustment ofthe lap-board, as set forth.
2. A lap-board, having a drawer or box, I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE K. PROGTOR.
