ADJUSTABLE TRESTLE OR THE LIKE Filed June 19, 1946 Inventor WALTER F. CHAR L-EY MM E a-1 Patented May 4, 1948 Assessment on A pl at on Jun 19., 1946 .s1efia1;mtn; ii
The present invention lrelaites to a [structural d vicein the form. of 1aimultiplemur osesunp fi in'g frame andnovel rne'ans carried by said .rra e for various adjustments and levelling urposes.
Moreispecifically, the invention pertains {to ,a lee-equipped LU-S ap d shame, th e th eo being provided l-with ,Coadting and jcomplemerital adjusting and levelling device's whereby .to permit the frame, as a unit, to occupyfdesired .perpendiculiar and angular ;positions in respect to the ground or other Supporting surface.
The stru ture,.pifiimarilylconsidered,Iis designed togs'erve asa s c-called carpenters saw-trestle or horse, but "is such in construction .ilnd fform as to constitutean adjustablejsupporting frame for camp jta b es, ror work benches, rug-making frames, and jformany other purposes, some of which willf bejhere'inafterfsetforth.
fBriefly,. and'incarrying out the preferred.em bodiment of the overallhons'truction,.I contem plate the adoption andnse of a UefraI Ie, pref erajbly constructed ,Ifrorfn available pipe lengths, [the horizontal pipe being provided with a capping board, or the like, ,andthe vertical pipes constituting the legs and these being bifurcated and the furcations-stradd1i-ng and being adjustably connected with especially constructed fixtures,
said fixtures having ground-contacting feet and arcuate racks coacting with detents on said legs in a manner toattain the desiredadl'llsting and levelling results.
.Another and obvious ObjC1':.iQf the invention ,is to ,provide ;a structure of the typehereinjmentioned whichis possessed offsimpliciity, durability andefiiciency, wherebytoaoc m ish desired ends in .a reliable .and'satisfaetorym ner.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will becomemore readily-apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings. V r
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a so-called carpenters horse or saw trestle constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.

These feet rest on the ground or other supporting surface, as is obvious. The longitudinally bowed or curved member 25 is provided with teeth 26 and constitutes a segmental or arcuate rack. The extreme central or crown portion 21 is provided with an outstanding assembling and retaining hook 28 fitting between the furcations 20 and 2| and coacting with a lug 29 to define an entrance opening 30 for the assembling bolt 3| (see Figure 4). There is another bolt 32 and this serves to secure the cylindrical fitting or insert 33 in place. Said fitting has its lower end of V-shaped form,

"There is sufiicient play in the connection (the bolt 3| and the parts 28 and 29) to permit the adjuster unit 22 to be bodily shifted in relation to the legs to ob-IL After the.
tain the desired adjustment results. A adjustment has been made, the detent 34 engages the selected teeth 26 in the rack-bar, and the a substantially U-shaped frame including a pair of duplicate vertical legs and a horizontal connecting portion between the upper ends of said legs, said legs being of duplicate construction and each leg having its lower end portion bifurcated to provide a pair of furcations, a retaining bolt passing through the leg at a point inwardly of the outer end portions of said furcations, an insert plugged into the leg and fitting between the furcations, the outer end portions of said insert being of V-shaped form, constituting a detent and being situated within the confines of the leg bolt 3! rests on the crown spot 21. By sliding'th'e' bolt in relation to the hook 28, it can be lifted 34 can also be disengaged to attain the desired clearance and shiftable adjustment.
As before stated, the invention herein under advisement is, generally speaking, a U-frame so constructed and equipped as to permit it be attached to a carpenters saw trestle. By providing the adjusting units or devices 12 and, providing the U-frame I0 and capping board [1, an assemblage is thus provided which is, in effect, a supporting frame susceptible of many different uses. Thatis to say, it can be used as a upport for table boards, work benches, embroidery frames, and for many other uses. The device can be used alone or in combination with other corresponding or like devices when it is necessary to employ same in plural relationship.
It is understood that I am not particularly interested in the various functions and purposes for which the supporting frame ultimately be adopted and used, but merely in the construction of the frame itself, as'shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed thata clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary. l
It is to be understood, however, that even though I have, herein shown and described a preferred embodiment ofrmy invention that the.
same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: V i i 1'. As a new article of manufacture and as a component part of a structural device of the class described, a C-shaped member havingits ends terminating in supporting feet, an arcuate rackbar carried thereby, a hook mounted on the crown portion, and a. lug also on said crown portion associated with the bill of the hook.
2. In a structural device of the class described,
at points inwardly of the extreme outer ends of said furcations. .3 The structure specified in claim 2, together with an adjuster device for each leg, the adjuster 7 device being adapted to be mounted between the f-urcations and including a C-shaped member having its outer ends terminating in supporting feet, including an arcuate toothed rack, the teeth being adapted to accommodate the aforementioned detent, and the intermediate portion of said member having an outstanding hook adapted to be connected with the aforementioned bolt.
' 4. In a structure of the class described, an inverted U-shaped frame, the ends of said frame constituting supporting legs, at least one of said legs having its lower end bifurcated, a bolt mount ed in said leg and situated at a point inwardly of the inner ends of the furcations, an insert in the form'of a plug, said insert being plugged into the leg between said furcations, the outer end portion of said insert being formed into a detent,
an adjuster device comprising a substantia1ly,C-'
shaped membermounted for use and operation between the furcations, the free ends of the C- shaped member constituting supporting feet, the
intermediate portion being provided with an out:
standing hook and an associated lug, said hook and lug being mounted on and for coaction with said bolt, and'said C-shaped member being provided with a toothed arcuate rack, said detent being adapted for coaction with the teeth of said rack.
