Abstract

488,228. Step - ladders. CHEW, W. March 25, 1937, Nos. 8773 and 8774. Conven. tion dates, March 31, 1936 and Aug. 31, 1936. [Class 20 (ii)] A step-ladder has the supporting struts universally hinged to its upper end and arranged to cross each other, a suitable clamp being utilized at the crossing to secure them in adjusted position. The struts 4 which are arranged crosswise are pivoted at 6 to hinges or pivot-members 5, which are secured to the upper end of the ladder 2, a slidable clamp comprising flanged plates 14 pivotally mounted in a saddle member 15 and a clamping screw 37, being used at the crossing to clamp the struts together. An alternative form of clamp comprising flanged plates and a centre through bolt may be used in which case the struts 4 are slotted at 20 to receive the bolt. Flexible members 24 are used to limit the backward and relative lateral movements of the struts, and, in addition, pivoted links 23 and a slotted bar 21 clamped between the struts at their crossing, and a cross-frame 27 connected by hinged members 26 to the sides of the ladder, may be used to limit the relative lateral spread and the backward movement of the struts respectively. Adjustable metal sleeves 7, Fig. 5, may be provided for the ends of the ladder sides and adjustable side feet 3 may also be used to support the ladder evenly on rough ground. Adjustable feet portions 30 may be clamped to the feet of the struts and when the ladder is used on soft soil these struts are turned into a horizontal supporting position.
