[Class 20 (ii).] Step ladders of the type in which the back supports are so mounted that they can move outwardly from each other at the same time as they move rearwardly from the ladder, have the supports mounted so as to swing upon axes inclined relatively to one another. The back supports A, which may be of triangular construction, are separately hinged at C on inclined axes, and the inclination of one of the axes may be adjustable at E so as to provide a small amount of relative adjustment for uneven ground support. Adjustable hinged ties F are provided to restrict the movement of the supports. In a modification, Fig. 3, the supports A are pivoted to a common hinged member L and pivoted stays F are provided to cause relative lateral movement of the supports. The stays F may be adapted so that their inner ends slide on a single rod R having a swinging movement on the ladder or on inclined rods T and to be self-locking. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the supports A are stayed by rigid struts U hinged to parts V which can slide in slides W on the ladder sides and be clamped between the upper step and a cross bar Z to maintain the supports rigidly in open position. The stays may be flexible and formed of parts connected to the ladder and supports and meeting at a point which is connected to another point of the ladder at a higher level. The ladder portion may have inclined sides meeting at a point which rests on the ground.
