Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE F. SNOVER, OF MENASHA, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 57.204. dated August- 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoRE F. SNovER, of Menasha, Winnebago county, State of Wiscousin, have invented a new and Improved Clothes Bar or Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled .in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication.
rlhe present invention relates to a novelconstructed bar or holder for clothes, towels, and other textile fabrics, which is especially adapted and intended for household use; and the bar or holder consists of a series of bars or rods so hung within a common head or frame and extending in radial lines therefrom that, when not desired to use any one or all of such bars, they can be swung up and into a vertical position, and there held, and thereby out ofthe way and occupying but a comparatively small amount of space, as will be obvious from the following detailed description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view of the holder with its several bars swung out and in a horizontal position; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section through the head of the holder, taken in the plane ofthe line afa, Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a similar section to Fig. 2, but taken in the plane of the line y y, Fig. 1, and with a bar swung up or ina vertical position.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
4 A in the drawings represents the head of the holder, which is formed of two plates, B and G, one, B, of which is flat, and has formed upon its lower end a semicircular-shaped projecting collar, D, having a square shoulder, E, around its periphery, and the other, E, is attached to the upper portion of the at plate B by riveting, or in any other proper manner, and projects outward in a semicircular form or shape, F, with a series of radial slots, G, cut in the same, tapering in width from their outer ends inward. In each of these slots Gr one end of a bar, H, is placed, that, when swung down and in a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, rests upon the lower end of the slot, and is prevented from being drawn out by the weight of any clothes or towels or other fabrics then hung upon such bar by coming to a bearing against the upper ends of the slot, and by the pin or stud a inserted in it, which pin is upon the inside'of the portion c of the holder, the bar, when swung up and into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3, resting by such pin a upon the lower end of the slot G, and by its lower end against the squareshaped shoulder of the collar of the back plate, B.
The number of bars H used depends upon the number of slots made in the head, as well, also, as its size, each bar being arranged siinilarly to that hereinabove explained, and oper ating also substantially the same.
To secure the head to the wall of a room an aperture, I, is made in the buck plate, of such a shape that, while it can be freely placed over any screw-head or staple inserted in the wall,
the plate can pass under the head of such screw or staple, and thus be firmly and securely held in place, as plainly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
From the above description of my improved clothes-holder it is plainly apparent that it is extremely simple and cheap in construction, and in use very convenient, and susceptible ot' being so swung up against the wall, when not in use, as to aiiord no obstruction or inconvenience in passing around and about the room, thereby being especially adapted to small conipartinents, chambers, and other places where only desired to be used occasionally.
l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the plate B, with its shouldered collar D, the slotted plate F, and bars H, with studs a, constructed as described, and operating in the manner and for the pur pose specified.
THEODORE F. SNOVER.
