Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,994, dated November 25, 1862.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JOHN E. EARLE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and use fnl Improvement in Towel andClothes Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my invention as used for clothes'bars. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached parts of the same. Fig. 5 is a side View of my invention as used for towel bars. Fig. G is a top view of the same.

Same letters refer to like parts.

The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of a bracket, in which is fixed a perpendicular spindle, and ou which spindle I place two or more sockets, one above another, and each independent of another, and each one so formed as to freely turn on the spindle, and in each socket I place a bar, upon which to hang clothes in the laundry and towels in the chamber or washroom.

A is a bracket, having in either end a slot, B, through which it is secured to the wall (or wherever desired) by the screws (See Figs. 2 and 4.)

D is a spindle, supported in the bracket A by ears E E.

F are sockets placed upon the spindle D, and turning freely upon it.

G are bars inserted in the sockets F, upon which to hang the articles desired.

The sockets F may be made as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the inner end of the bars G bearing up against the lip H and resting upon a bar, I, across the outer end and bottom of the socket F, or, as in Figs. 5 and 6, inserted in the sockets Fff.

To enable others to use my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation.

Two screws or their equivalents, C, being first placed in the wall or wherever desired to place the bars, at the required distance apart, one f' 'i the upper end and one for the lower end of the bracket A, set the bracket A, Fig. l, so that the head of the screw C will pass through the slot B at a (see Fig. 4) and slip down. The upper portion of the slot being only wide enough to admit the body of the screw C, the head of the screw will hold the bracket A iirmly in its place, and at the same time may be easily removed by raising the bracket so as to release it from the heads of the screws C.

As represented in Fig. 1, the bars J, K, and L are turned against the wall to the left, the bar M against the wall to the right, and the remainingbars, N and O,are turned out for use, both represented as standing at right angles to the wall, one above the other, or maybe placed at different angles, more or less bars turned out, and all shall be full. If convenience requires, they may all be folded back against the wall, or any one may be moved at pleasure.

For towel or smaller bars, (see Figs. 5 and 6,) I make for three (as represented) bars the sockets f f, with curved shanks, so that the bars G, when standing as shown by black lines in Fig. 6, will be parallel; but either or all the bars G may be turned upon the spindle D (as shown by red lines, Fig. 6) in any direction. I am aware that bars have been constructed radiating from and revolving together around a common center, but all in the same plane.

I am alsoaware that bars have been hung in a bracket radiating from a common center, but in the same plane and folding only toward the center of radiation, as in the patent of Hosea Willard, granted February 18, 1862.

Therefore, having fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of brackets A and spindle D with the sockets F and bars G, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
