Patented 0ct.1, 1872.
Quantum itm'nsgfi,

IRA TrPAYNE, or CHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE SHELVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,776, dated October 1, 1872; ante'dated September 30,
.To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, IRA T. PAYNE, of Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Stove-Pipe Shelf, of which the following is a specification:
Figure '1 is a front view of my improved stove-pipe shelf, shown as attached to astovepipe. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an underside view of the is connected with the stove-pipe and supported, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a bar slotted longitudinally, and the ends of which are bent inward or are made with an offset-,as shown in Fig. 1, so as to lcave'a space between the body of the said bar and the stove-pipe. ted bar A maybe secured to the stove-pipe by means of screws or bolts, or by straps or hands attached. to them and passing around said pipe, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5. B is a U- shaped bar, upon the lower side of the middle part of which is formed a downwardly-projecting lug, b grooved upon its inner side to fit upon the slotted bar A, and with a hole formed through it to receive a hand-screw, O, which passes through a slot in the bar A and screws into a block, D, placed upon the inner side of The ends of the slot-' the bar A, between said bar and the stovepipe, and which is made with a central rib to fit into the slot of the bar A. By this construction the clamp cannot turn upon the bar A, and by loosening the screw 0 it may be slid up and down freely and again secured when adjusted by tightening the said screw. Upon the center and ends of the U-shaped bar B are formed, or to them are attached, upwardly-projecting pins b to enter a socket, a, formed upon or attached .to the edge of the middle part of the shelf E. The socket 5 is made long to give sufficient bearing to the pins 1) to hold the shelf E in a horizontal position. The shelf E is made with a narrow flange around its edge and with short legs 6 formed upon or attached to it, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3,,to enable the shelf to be stood upon the stove, table, or other support when desired.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent-- a downwardly-projecting lug, I), the screw 0, and block D, in combination with each other to adapt them to support a shelf, E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
' IRA T. PAYNE.
