HENRY J. vAN VALKENBUBGH AND DANIEL D. vAN vALKENBUReH, or RABBITT RIVER, MICHIGAN.
IMPRGVEMENT IN CLOTHESDRIERQ.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I3EAQ3, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, H. J. VAN VALKEN- BURGH and D. D. VAN VALKENBURGH, of Babbitt River, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Driers; and we do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of ourimproved clothes-drier, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same with its upper part tilted or in an inclined position.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures refer to like parts.
Thisinvention has reference to an improved clothesdrier, in which the post supporting the reel is made into two parts, hinged together, and supplied with means for properly retaining them in position when the reel is tilted or occupies a horizontal position, and in which the means employed in holding the parts of the reel in place upon the said post are of such a construction as to permit of the said reel being readily attached and detached when desired, substantially. as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
To enable others to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to the post supporting the reel, and which is retained in an upright position by the feet or base pieces a a. This post is made into two parts, the lower one of which is recessed to receive the upper one of said parts, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and having the latter pivoted or hinged to it in such a manner as to permit of said latter part with its reel being tilted, whereby the said reel may be brought within such a distance of the operator as to allow of the articles to be dried being hung upon its upper as readily as upon its lower lines. A staple or loop, I), is fasten ed to the lower or stationarypart of the postA, andreceives awedge, b, when the upper part of the said post is in a vertical position for the purpose of retainin g said upper part in the said position; but when the said wedge is withdrawn the said upper part may be tilted or inclined and held in such position by the said staple, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2. B B refers to the reel, which consists of the horizontal bars B and inclined bars B, the inner ends of the former being hinged or pivoted within sockets formed in the cap 0 fitting. upon the upper end of the post A, while the bars B in the sockets of the said ferrule. E is the line upon which the clothes to'be dried are hung, and which is wound upon the reel B B by inserting the knotted end thereof within the lower one of the double slots (2 e, and thence passing it around the reel, so as to enter the slots 6 0, until it has been entirely strung upon said reel, (see Fig. 1,) when its end is fastened to one of the horizontal bars of the reel, as shown, putting it (the reel) in suitable condition to receive the articles for drying.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The reel-post A, constructed as described, in combination with the staple b and wedge b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The cap 6 and ferrule O, in combination with'the reel B B and post A, constructed and arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
