Description

s. J. NEWELL.
lm provement in Holders for Painters Use;
No, 124,610, Fatentgd Marchl2,1 87 2 Witnesses: 5) 1n ntor- Q 4 Wy mm lb UNITED SAMUELU. NEWELL, OF DIRIGO, MAINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 24,6l0, dated March 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. N EWELL, of Dirigo, in the county of Kennebec and in the State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Holderfor Painters Use; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a revolving holder for painters use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my holder, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the vise used in my holder.
A represents an upright post, which is intended to reach from the floor to the ceiling of the shop, and erected in any convenient place in the same. This post is provided with a gudgeon at each end, so that it may be turned with case. In or near the center of this post is connected a vise or holder, B, in a horizontal position, said vise or holder having a journal, a, at its inner end, which is inserted in a hole in the post, and held by a pin or other suitable means'to prevent it from coming out, but at the same time allow the vise or holder to be freely revolved. The holder B may be adjusted up or down on the post, by having any desired number of holes through the post A, through either one of which the journal a may be passed. The vise or holderB consists of one stationary and one hinged jaw, connect ed together by means of a screw, 12, and thumbnut d, and on the inner side of the hinged jaw I are one, two, or more points or teeth, e, as
shown in Fig. 2. Upon the inner end of the journal a is a small cog-wheel, f, which is used, in combination with a latch, h, pivoted to the post A, to hold the vise or holder at any de' sired point and prevent it from turning. On the floor, under the lower end of the post A, is a perforated plate, 0, or its equivalent, into which is dropped a rod, 122, moving in staples a n on the post A, so as to prevent the post from revolving; or, when desired to revolve said post, the rod m is attached or held to the post by any suitable means.
Inusin g this machine, the article to be painted, varnished, or ornamented is fastened in the holder B so that it will balance, which enables it to be turned either way with perfect ease.
The advantages of this machine are apparent to every painter, and need no elaboration here.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An upright revolving post provided with a horizontal revolving vise or holder, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with a horizontal revolving vise or holder on an upright revolving post, I claim a cog-wheel and latch, or their equivalent, arranged to hold said vise or holder at any desired point and prevent it from turning, substantially as herein set forth.
3. In combination with an upright revolving post carrying a horizontal revolving vise or holder, I claim a perforated plate and rod, or their equivalents, for holding the post at any desired point and prevent it from turning, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of January, 187 2.
SAMUEL J. NEVVELL.
