Description

. w; M'. KNAPP. vTrestles for Painting Coach-Bodies,.&c. No. 144,339. Patented N\0v.4,1873.-
UNITED@ Sra'rns "ILLIAM M. KNAPP, OF IIIUNCIE, INDIANA.
IMIROVEIVIEN'II IN TRESTLS FOR PAINTING COACH-BODIES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,339, dated November 4, 1873; application filed April 29, 1873.
VState of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Painters7 Revolvw `ing Body-Trestles;v and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a painters trestle having an adjustable revolving table so arranged that it can be adjusted to suit any shapeor style of buggy or carriage body, whether straight or curved on the bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the painters trestle, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the revolving table.
A A represent the legs of the trestle, eonnected at their upper ends by a casting, B, having sockets a a on its under side, in which the ends of the legs are inserted and riveted or otherwise rmly secured. In the center of the casting B is a circular aperture with a collar, b, forming the upper bearing for the shaft upon which the table revolves. A suitable distance above the lower ends of the legs A A is a platform, C, supported upon and held by rodsd d, which connect and brace the legs. Immediatelyabove this platform is a crossbrace, D, with cup c in the center, forming the lower bearing for the shaft of the revolving table. This cross-brace and cup may be dispensed with, if so desired, and the lower end of the table-shaft be placed in a suitable bearing on the platform C. E represents the table-shaft, having its bearings, as above described, and supporting at or on its upper end the table G, which is firmly secured to said shaft. At one end of the table Gr isa crossbar, H, provided with guide-rods f f passing down through the table; and this bar is elevated or depressed, at will, by means of a crank-screw, I. 'i i are the points or pins upon which the body rests..
When a buggy or carriage body is placed on the table G, the workman does not have to walk around his work and carry his tools, 85e., but revolves his work to him.
The body, resting upon the pins t" t', is raised up from the table, so that the workman can paint the bottom of the body while on the table.
The adjustable cross-bar H allows the work` man to raise the body so that it will be level on the table, or so that one end can be raised or lowered, at the will of the workman, but more particularly to hold bodies level that have uneven or curved bottoms.
Two of the legs A A are provided with wheels J, and on one of the other two is secured a casting, K, to which is pivoted a handle, L. On the casting K are two lugs or projections, h le., to form stops for the handle L, when turned outward, whereby the whole trestle, with the body resting upon it, may be moved on the wheels J from one part of the room to another, or from one room to another. Then the handle is not in use it can be folded down out of the way.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The arrangement of the legs A A, casting B with sockets a a and collar b, the platform C, and rods d d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the trestle A B C, the wheels J, casting K having stops h 7L, and the handle L, all constructedv and arranged substantially as Vand for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The cross-bar H, with guide-rods f j' and crank-serew I, arranged on the table of a painter-s trestle, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The revolving table G with shaft E, in combination with the trestle A B C, all constructed and arranged substantially' as and'for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aftX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. M. KNAPP.
