UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC GEORGE W. HUTOHINS, OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN W. FOSS, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,779, dated August 15, 1882.
Application filed May 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Humorous, of Dover, in the county of Strafford, of the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ulothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figurel is a top view, Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of a drier embodying my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
This drier has a stationary standard or post, A, upon the top of which is pivoted a rotary head, B, the pivot being shown at a. The head is to freely revolve on the pivot, and is provided with a series of radial arms, 0, extended from it, as shown. Each of them at its inner end enters and is to slide vertically in one of a series of grooves, 0, made in the head longitudinally thereof, such grooves being at equal distances apart. Directly over each of the said arms is a wire or wire cord, D, which at its inner end is secured to a ferrule or collar, 0, fixed on and encompassing the head. The said wire or wire cord at its outer end is fastened to an eye, d, extending from the arm at or near its outer extremity, as shown. I prefer to groove each arm lengthwise of it from end to end on its upper side, the groove being represented at g in transverse section in Fig. 4., which is such a section of one of the arms and its wire cord. On the head, atits lower part, is another metallic ferrule, e, and in each groove of the head and to project through the said ferrule, and extended down from the radial arm of such groove, is a wire spring-latch,
E, formed as represented. =While this latch admits of the arm being moved either upward 4.0 or downward in the groove,it serves to support the arm when the latter is in a horizontal or its highest position. On either arm having at itsinner end been moved downward sufficiently and an article of clothes to be dried having 5 been laid upon it, the arm is to be moved upward until the article or clothes may be carried firmly against the wire cord'of such arm. The said cord will then serve to hold the clothes in place upon the arm while the drying of them may be going on. My invention is intended to render clothes-pins unnecessary for holding the clothes upon the drier-arms, such pins often causing the clothes to be torn or otherwise injured.
By grooving the radial arms in manner as described they, with their cords or wires, will maintain the clothes to better advantage in place on the arms than would be the case were the latter without such grooves.
I claim- I 1. In the clothes-drier, the combination of the grooved rotary head B, its series of wires or cords, l), and the series of radial arms (J and their supporting-latches E, all arranged 6 and applied substantially and to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the grooved rotary head and its two ferrules with the series of radial arms and the series of radial wires and their spring-latches, all arranged and to operate substantially as shown and explained. GEORGE W. HUTOHINS, Witnesses:
R. H. EDDY, E. B. PRATT.
