UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILSON IVILLIAM SMITH, OF FRITCHTON, INDIANA.
CLOTHES-LINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,314, dated December 6, 1898.
Application tiled February 3, 1897.
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WrLsoN WILLIAM SMITH, residing at Fritchton, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful- Clothes-Line, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to clotheslines, and more particularly to a construction by means of which the pins are always convenient and ready for use; and another object of the invention is to provide a clothes line or hanger which` can be set up in any place desired and will accommodate a great With these various objects in view my invention consists, essentially, of two standards or uprights, each carrying a cross-arm, said cross-arms being connected by clothes-lines, the upper ends of the standards being connected by a line to which a series of wires are loosely attached, each Wire of the series carrying a clothes-pin at the lower end thereof, which is adapted to be fastened upon the clothes arranged upon the lines connecting the cross-arms.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specication, Figure l is a view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one end of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of onevof the standards provided with the. cross-arms. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the position the pins occupy when not in use. Fig. 5 isa detail perspective view of one of the pins and connecting cords or wires detached.
In carrying out my invention I employ two standards or uprights A, having the cross arms or bars B arranged near their upper ends, and connecting the said cross arms or bars B are the clothes-lines C, upon which Serial No. 621,864. (No model.)
the clothes are hung. Connecting the upper 45 end of the standards is a line-wire D, to which are loosely connected a series of connectingwires E, carrying the clothes-pins F at their lower ends.
By means of the device constructed as de- 5o scribed any desired number of pins can be arranged upon the line-wire D, and whenever it is desired to fasten a cloth or garment to either of the clothes-lines the pin is moved to the desired point, the connecting Wire or 55 cord being slid along the line-wire and the pin fastened over the garment or cloth for the purpose of securing it to the clothes-line. When not in use, the pins can be collected at one end of the line-wire or left hanging in 6o any desired position, and, if desired, the linewire can be detached from the standards and also the clothes-lines and placed within a suitable box Gr, arranged upon one of the standards. The standards are pointed at their 65 lower ends, as shown at A', in order that they can be quickly and easily forced into the ground whenever desired.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and ellicient con- 7o struction of clothes-line in which the pins are always handy and ready for use.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 7 5 A clothes-drier, comprising a pair of standards having cross-arms adjacent to their upper ends, a line-wire connecting the upper ends of said standards, clothes-lines connecting the ends of the respective cross-arms, and 8o clothes-pins, slidably suspended from the linewire by flexible connections long enough to permit of their being used on either of the clothes-lines, substantially as set forth.
WILSON WILLIAM SMITH.
