Description
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. DEVOE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPaovED CLOTHES-Dama.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 37,739, dated February 24, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, DANIEL M. DEVoE, of the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Clothes- Drier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specicaton, in Which- Figure l represents a front elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the three views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the ari an gement of a semicircular slotted case, provided with springs or spring-catches on top and with a continuous semicircular stop or with a series of stops at the bottoni, in combination With a series of radial folding bars, in such a man- 11er that when said bars are turned \up Vthey are perfectly protected against dust or other impurities, and they are retained by the spring-catches and prevented from turning down spontaneously, and that one or more of said bars can be turned down and used for drying clothes Whenever it may be desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a semicircular case, made of Wood or any other suitable material, and so constructed that it can readily be secured to the wall or any other convenient spot in the house. The concave front side of this case is formed of a series of slats, a, extending from the bottom to the top, and placed at such distances apart that room is left between them for the folding bars b. These bars are hinged to a wire, c, which is secured to the stationary slats a by staples d, or by any other suitable means, in such a position that the bars b turn up and down in radial planes. When turned up, they are retained by springs e, which are secured to the under surface of the top of the case A, and which bear on the ends of the bars and retain them in an upright position Whenever the same are turned up. In this position the bars b are fully pro-y tected against dust or other impurities, they are not liable to turn down spontaneously, and the case A, with all the bars, takes up but very little space on the Wall of a room or house, or Wherever it may be secured. When it is desired to use the bars b for the purpose of drying clothes, they are turned down by means of buttons f, or their equivalents, to a position shown in red outlines in Figs. 2 and 3. Vhen brought in this position, the inner ends of the bars come in contact with the flange g of a semicircular stop, h, which is rigidly attached to the bottom of the case A. A rim, t', projecting above the surface of said bottom, gives to the bars a slightly upward inclined position, so that the clothes that may be hung on said bars are not liable to slide off spontaneously. The number of bars contained in the case A may of course be increased at pleasure by increasing the diameter of the semicircular top and bottom, and the length of the bars or the height of the case 'A may be varied according to the room or space in which the clothes-drier is to be put up. The several bars can be used one entirely independent ot' the other7 and if only little hangin g-room is required one or more of the bars can be turned down, leaving the others in their places. The case A may also be made to represent a ilutedcolumn, or it may be ornamented in anydesirable manner, to correspond to the room in which it is to be put up.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe arrangement of the semicircular slotted ease A, provided with springs e on top and with a continuous stop, h, or its equivalent, on the bottom, in combination with a series of radial folding bars, b, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
DANIEL M. DE VOE.
