IMPROVED CLOTHES-DRIER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 47,698, dated May 16, 1865.

.To all whom" it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD BUoKLIN, J r., of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have im'ented a new andImproved Clothes-Drier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying,drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1- rcpresents a sectional side elev tion of this invention, showing the arms extended in black andcolla'psed in rcdoutline. Fig." 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in. the plane indicated by the line .70 a, Fig; l, and lookingin the direction of the arrow opposite to that line. This invention consists in a rod fitting into a socket in a'stationary post, and arranged to slide in said socket without being allowedto turn, in combination with radiating arms extending from a sleeve which swivels on the.

upper end of said lon gitudinall y-slidi n g central rod, andwith braces hinged at one end to the arms and at the opposite end to a ring which. swivels on the upper end of thestationary postin such a manner that by raising the central rod the radiating arms are caused to turn down, and by depressing said central rod the arms are turned out in a horizontal position and braced ready to support the clothes-line and the clothes or other articles to be-hung up. Furthermore, if the line shortens by moisture or other causes, the radiating arms are permitted to turn up, and injury to the same or to the line is avoided.

A represents a post, which is either permanently secured in the ground or which rises y from a suitable foot or base, so that said post may be moved from one place to another whenever it may be desirable. The upper end of the post is turned down and forms a guide for a ring, B, of metal or any othersuitable material, and from the surface of this ring rise lugs a, to which the inner ends of braces b are pivoted by means of pins 0. The outer ends of these braces connect to brackets d, secured to the under surface of radiating folding arms G. Thesearms are hinged to a sleeve, D, which fits loosely on the upper end of a rod, E, being connected thereto in such a manner that it (the sleeve) is free to revolve in either'direction, but it is not allowed to move up or down independent of said rod.

, Therod E is fitted into a socket in the post A, and it is so arranged that it is free to slide up and down, but not permitted to turn round. This purpose may be effected either by making the socket in the post and a portion of the rod square; or said rod may be made to slide on a featherkey, or in any other suitable manner. A spring-catch, f, fitted into the post and made to drop into holes 9 in the rod, serves to retain the latter in the desired position.

By releasing the spring'catch and raising the rod' to the position shown in red outlines in Fig. 1, the arms (3 turn down close to the post, and the clothes-drier can be stored away in a small compass. By depressing the central-rod and raising one or more of the arms said arms are turned up to a horizontal position, and when the central rod is secured by the spring-catch the arms are not permitted to turn down spontaneously, and they are capable to support the clothcsline .and the clothes to be dried. A large amount of drying-room can thus be obtained by simple, cheap, and effective.
