Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. E. FICKETT, OF GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-DRIRE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,870, dated September 4, 1860.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. E. FIcKErT, of Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and Improved Apparatus for Drying Clothes; and I do declare the following to be a full, correct,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I, is a front perspective view of my improved clothes drier. Fig. II, is a top view of the same. Fig. III, an end perspective view of the same, when folded. Fig. IV, a view of my improved drier when combined with the standard and socket by which means the drier is rotated. Fig. V, a view of the standard, showing the buttons attached to the sides of the same. Fig. VI, an interior view of the socket inserted in the ground for supporting the standard, showing the grooves or ribs in the same. Fig. VII, a view of the hub, to which are attached the arms, and into which the standard is inserted. Fig. VIII, a top view of the socket employed.
Similar parts of the invention, are designated by the same letters in the drawings.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and operation of a clothes drier as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to speak of its construction and operation.
A represents a central hub, to which are attached in any desired way a series of radial arms B, B, B, B, so attached to the hub A, that they can be readily folded or closed and assume the position shown in Fig. III. These arms are provided with a series of openings or holes, a., c, a, through which are inserted the cords C, C, C, upon which the clothes to be dried are hung.
To the lower portion of the hub A, is attached the rope D and anchor E, for -the purpose of preventing the drier from being overturned or easily moved from the position in which it is placed.
In connection with the different portions of my invention, thus far enumerated, I employ a standard F, which is inserted in an opening in the under side of the hub A and serves to support the drier. This standard F rests in the socket G, inserted in the ground and which socket G is ribbed on its interior and provided with a series of openings (c, a, Fig. VI), which allow any waste water that may accumulate in the socket G to run olf, which were the socket G not ribbed on its interior would cause the standard F to swell and prevent its removal from socket G. By this means the removal of the drier and standard can at any time be readily effected.
By using my drier in connection with the standard F and socket G, I am enabled to make a stationary or revolving drier as may be desired.
IVhen I desire to have the drier stationary I adjust the buttons or some equivalent means, thus allowing them to assume a horizontal position, by which means the standard F, to which is attached the drier is depressed and the bottoms of the arms vB, B are placed on a level with the ground,
thus preventing the drier from revolving.
Then a drier that shall revolve is desired, the buttons 5, are adjusted and assume a vertical position. By this means the standard F is elevated and the drier attached t-o the same will revolve freely, inasmuch as it is elevated a suiiicient distance from the ground to do so.
A series of stays c, c, c, are shown in Fig. IV, which serve to retain the arms B, B in their distended position, and prevents the closing of the same while in a position to revolve, being attached as they are directly to one arm and fastened to another.
I claim- The drier constructed substantially as described, in combination with the standard F, and ribbed socket G, the whole arranged and operated as described, and for the purpose specified.
H. E. FICKETT.
In presence of- A. SIDNEY DoANE, JNO. VARD, J r.
