Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT ormcn RANSOM GILBERT, OF MORR-IS'VILLE, VERMONT.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,779, dated August 28, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANsoM GILBERT, of Morrisville, in the county of Lamoille and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specication, in the several figures of which similar characters of reference denote the same part.
Figure l is a perspective view of the drier. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through axis of standard; showing connection of arms and braces, with hubs.
The nature of this invention consists in providing an elastic connection between the hubs when the drier is expanded, in order to furnish a self adjustment to admit of the contraction of line which takes place when wet clothing is hung thereon: the details of construction and operation are as follows:
In the drawing S is the standard. On the head of which is secured the hub H by screw c, so as to permit it to revolve thereon.
H is the movable hub, capable of sliding on the standard, and revolving upon it.
A A are the arms and B B are the braces, connected with the hubs by straps b and with band c. The hubs being cut away as seen at Z to permit the folding of the said arms and braces. i
C C are the cords, held by arms A, upon which the clothing is to be hung.
Pendenty from the upper hub are india' rubber straps D D, each having holes e in its lower extremity for the reception of pins f projecting from the lower hub, so that when the sliding hub is moved upward to expand the arms it will be held in position by the elastic connections D D. This elastic connection holds the cords O, at all times taut, and when these cords contract by dampness caused by hanging wet clothing thereon, the rubber straps permit the system to yield to thiscontraction without the strain upon the arms which in this case will take place where the connection between the hubs is invariable, or where the lower hub is secured to a given point of the standard.
I claim` The arrangement of the india rubber straps D D, and pins f f with the hubs H H and standard, arms, braces, and cords, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses. -1
RANS OM GILBERT.
