cLoTHEs-DRIERL Specfication of Letters Patent 1\To. 19,772, dated March 30, 1858.

To all whom 'it may concm: v

Be it known that I, J AMEs J. HAMILTON, of Newcastle, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Hanging Out Clothes to Dry, (Clothes-Rack;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making the same a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention, consists in an upright post, to which is attached four arms, which said arms are at-tached to the post in such a mann'er, that they may be suspended in a horizontal position, forming` a right angle with said post, through which, said arms, a cord is run and upon which clothes may be hung. w

To enable others to make and use my in- Vention, I will describe its construction and operation.

I construct a post in drawing, marked 21, making the same 15 ft. long which is hollow from the base, marked 22 to the cap marked 23-have pockets in the sides of said post, in which the arms may fold. nd, I construct the arms marked 1, 2, 8, 4 making the same 10 feet longand make holes in said arms at a regular distance from the post (hooks on the upper side of said arms answering the same end) through which to run the cord marked 13, 14 & 15. I attach these arms to the post atthe lower end by means of .wooden pegs or hinges. I place across the hollow in the post below the lower end of the arms, a. roller to which is attached a cord running from thence through to the hollow of the post, to the top of the post where it is attached to four other cords marked 9, 10, 11 and 12 which said cords pass over four pulleys marked 7 and Sand are attached to the outer end of the arms. I attach to said ro'ller a 'crank by which I turn the roller and draw up the arms or let them down at pleasure. I place on the top of the post a cap marked 23 extending out to protect the whole from the weather, when wound up. The same when t-hus constructed is set over'a post in the ground so as to hold it solid. The arms being extended, the line is drawn and the Clothes suspended across it.

IVhat I claim as novel and for which ask Letters Patent, is-

The application of the roller and pulleys to the arms and the folding of the arms to the post.
