Clothes-Reels.
Patented July 22,1873.
Ij'NrrEn' STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JAMES MGMAHON, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-REELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,064. dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 17,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES 1VIGMAHON, of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Revolving Clothes- Reels; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my device. Fig. 2is a detached and enlarged view of one of the clothes-bars.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
This invention has for its object the construction of a reel for drying clothes, the axis and bars of which are horizontal with the ground, and the whole so arranged that the bars can be filled by the operator while standing in one position, and also that no clothespins or other analogous devices are required to confine the clothes to the bars. The invention consistsin the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents two vertical posts, into and near the top of which is journaled the shaft B, from which radiate the arms 0 in corresponding pairs. Into and near the ends of each pair of these arms are journaled the clothes-bars D, upon which the clothes are to be hung, as upon a line. E are binding slats, secured to the clothes-bars D by elastic bandsa, or by other convenient devices, so arranged that one end thereof may be loosened and remo ed to allow the clothes to be hung upon the bars, when the slat, is replaced and secured, thereby fastening the clothes to the bars, so that wind or accident will not remove them. Gross-braces may be extended and secured between these radial arms about midway between their ends and the shaft, and to them may be journaled similar bars, upon which to hang smaller articles.
Great care should be taken in the construction of this device that the clothes-bars shall rotate freely in their journals, so that as the wheel is revolved to bring said bars into position to be filled from one stand-point, successively, the weight of the clo hes, hanging vertically, will rotate said bars, prevent the clothes winding around them, and keep them in a vertical position.
Any suitable and convenient device may be adopted for rotating the wheel, or of holding the same in any desired position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a revolving clothes bar, D, the binding-slats E, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The posts A, radial arms (3, shaft B, and revolving clothes-bars D, when the parts are constructed and combinedto operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
JAMES MGMAHON.
