Description

W. C. MAYNARD.
Improvement in Clothes Drie r's.
N0. 122,043. PatentedDec.-19,1871.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM C. MAYNARD, OF MARATHON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH ES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,043, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM G. MAYNARD, of Marathon, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Driers.
My invention relates to that class of clothes driers which is adapted to be hung upon any suitable object, and constructed in such manner that a current of air will be permitted to circulate'among the clothes supported by the drier in order to free them of any moisture which they may contain. My invention consists in mounting the holding-arms or bars upon aseries of spindles form ed upon a baseplate supported by a bracket. the arms or bars being held in position upon said spindle by means of an adjustable top plate connected with the base-plate by suitable screw-bolts, both being supported upon the bracket-arm in such manner as will admit of a lateral or swinging movement of the holding-frame; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing furnished and torming part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description ot'a clothesdrier embodying my invention.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a view, in perspective, ot'one of my improved clothes-driers; and Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the same.
A represents the bracket or holder for the dryin g-frame. In this instance it consists of a plate, B, and a supporting-arm, G, the former being pro vided with suitable means for its attachment to any desirable object. D represents the base-plate of the drying-frame; it is formed upon its upper side with a series of spindles, (I. E are the holding-bars; they are provided upon their inner ends with loops F, by which they are connected with the spindles a. G represents the top plate; it is supported at its inner edge by a projecting pin,
b, extending downward from its under side and resting in a socket, 0, formed upon the upper edge of the base-plate D. A screw-bolt, H, passes from the imder side of the bracket-arm 0, through the plate D G, and is held by means of a winged nut, d, thereby forming a connection between the drying-frame and the bracket. As a substitute for the spindles the outer bar at each end of the frame is attached to a screw-bolt, I, passing through the ends of the plates D G, and provided upon the upper end with a winged nut, c. In this manner the plate G, resting upon the bars B, may be adjusted to such an extent as to increase or lessen the degree of tension upon the ends of the bars.
In practice, when the drier is constructed as above described, the bracket A is hung upon any suitable object, and the bars E, being each connect-ed with a separate spindle, are spread apart and filled with the material to be dried. It will be seen that in case of accident, if a bar should become broken, the bolt H may be loosened and the entire dryin g-frame removed from the bracket. The nuts 0 being released from the end bolts I the plate G is raised, and the broken bar having been removed from its spindle its place is supplied with a new one. The several parts being returned to their former positions, and the nut (1 upon the bolt H tightened, the drier is again ready for use.
It, in case the drier should be hung adjacent to a stove, upon the outside of a window-frame, or in any position in which it may be inconvenient to reach the holding bars, by simply loosening the nut (1 upon the bolt H the entire drying-frame maybe swung around within reach, the bolt acting as a pivot.
The plates D G may, if desired, be made semicircular, that form being preferable in the manufacture of clothes-driers of this class.
A drier constructed as described may be employed as a towel-rack.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved clothes-drier herein described, consisting of the base-plate D provided with the spindles a, top plate G, and bars E,mounted upon the bracket A and pivoted thereto, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM G. MAYNARD.
