Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES AM. TOLLEY, OF BIG LICK, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
VSpeciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,214, dated April 30, 1861.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. TOLLEY, of Big Lick, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofV this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section of Iny invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the tub, the Inovable disk being removed.
Similar letters of reference in both views represent like parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, having reference to the drawings.
I use the common round tub C. In the center of the bottom I fix a stem D, which has a hub d at the lower end of suiiicient thickness vertically to receive the journals of the rollers c. This hub cl is nearly star-shaped, and the points e admit of the hanging of the inner end of the rollers c eccentrically to the stem D--that is, to one side ot a direct line from the center of the blocks f to the center of the hub d. The outer end of said rollers turns in the blocks f, which are fixed to the tub by screws or otherwise. A
The hub g of the disk A is made the same shape and for a similar purpose as the hub d, but with an opening for the stem D to pass through its center.
The rollers c of thel upper disk A are supported by and turn in the hub gand the hangers h, said hangers and hub being rigidly fixed to the disk A.
The triangular spaces between the rollers c are each provided with two ribs y, running parallel with the roller next to them, and three ordinates b, ruiming parallel with the next roller. These ribs may be made separate and nailed to disks A and B equidistant from each other. The hub g rests on hub CZ, thus preventing the rollers c from coming-in contact with the rollers c.
The hand-lever F is connected with the disk A by means of the standard u.. The stern D passes through the lever F and formsits axis.
The rot-ating board or disk A is liftedoii, when the clothes and water may be put into the tubl C, after which it is replaced, when it is ready for operation, which is the same in this as in other machines of a similar construction.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure The combination of the two sets of rollers c c with each other and with the disks A B, when the rollers upon the disk A are arranged to cross those of the disk B, all in the manner herein shown and described.
JAMES M. ToLLEY.
Witnesses c J oHN A. SANNs, WM. H. DENNIS.
