Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW E. LAPI-IAM, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 30,331, dated October 9, 1860.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDREW E. LAPHAM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in lVashing-hflachines, which is fully and clearly set forth in the following specification, including the accompanying drawing, with letters of reference marked there on and making part of the same;
The drawing exhibits a side parallel vieiv of a vertical section taken or drawn length- Wise through the center of the Whole apparatus.
a represents the frame.
b represents the axle, or axis upon Which and around Which the Washing apparatus is made to revolve.
c is the crank and handle.
Z is an air tight cylinder similar to al barrel in shape and construction.
e are transverse ribs Which are attached to the inner surface of the cylinder cl, and extends around the entire inner circumference of the cylinder (Z. These ribs e formd When the apparatus is in motion-a revolving reversible double inclined cylindrical ribbed Washing board, in consequence of the axle b being placed at a right angle with the long diameter of the air tight cylinder' ci, Which arrangement causes the cylinder to revolve endwise instead of sideivise, which has been the custom heretofore in Washing machines.
of Wood or smooth stone of about two to -1 four inches diameter and requiring about one to tivo dozen, and are thrown loose into the cylinder d.
g, is the air tight lid or door through Which the clothes are put into the machine.
The operation of Washing consists in putting the clothes, balls and Water all together in the cylinder d and close the air tight lid g and revolve the cylinder Z endivise around the axle b, Which operation causes the clothes to rapidly change their relative position With the loose balls f, While the whole is being rolled up and down upon the transverse ribs e Which-as previously explained-forms a revolving reversible double inclined cylindrical Washing board, the Whole operation being simple and effective.
Having thus clearly described the construction and operation of my invention What I claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is The air tight cylinder al, when constructed With transverse circular ribs e as described and arranged to revolve endvvise together With the loose balls f, substantially as setforth.
ANDREV F. LAPHAM. lVitnesses:
