SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 653,393, dated. July y10, 1900.
Application led October 20, 1899 Serial No. 734,250. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLsWQRTH M. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Book- Cover, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to book-covers; and the object in view is to provide a temporary .cover for the backs or bindings of books adapted to lit varying sizes of the same and be inseparably held when applied by using two substantially-triangular pieces of paper or other suitable material so shaped and vde signed as to allow the sealing of one'corner of each section and an arrangement thereof to slip on each back-section of the book and subsequently unite both sections on a'diagonal line across the backs or bindings of the book by adhesive material preferably carried by said sections.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a book, showing the backs or bindings open and the improved temporary cover applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the improved temporary cover, showing the sections united and looking toward the interior thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the improved temporary cover looking toward the outside thereof and also showing the sections connected. Fig. 4 is a plan View of one of the blanks of which each section is made up.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate substantially-triangular sections, of which the im;
proved temporary cover is composed. Each of these sections is made up from the blank shown by Fig. 4, and as both are precisely alike only one will be particularly described. The section-blank comprises'a body 3, having an outer side edge, elongated iiap 4, adapted to be turned inwardly on a folding-line 5 and merging into or continuous with a tongue 6 in a plane substantially at right angles to the flap 4. Adjacent the tongue 6 is an interme diate tongue 7 and succeeding this is an inner tongue 8. The tongues 6,7 ,and 8 are adapted to beturned inwardly over the body 3 on fold ing-lines 9, the lines of the tongues 7 and 8 being virtual continuations of that of the tongue 6. Between the outer tongue 6 and the adjacent edge of the intermediate tongue 7 a recess 10 is formed at the base of said tongue 7 and duplicated, as at 11, at the opposite portion of the base of the same tongue, both recesses ex- 6o tending inside the plane of the folding-line 9, and the edges of the tongues 6 and 8 nearest the tongue 7 slope down gradually and merge into the said recesses 10 and 11. The greater portion of the tongue 8 is regularly rounded 65 into a similar coating 16, extending almost completely over the inner surface of the edge of the closing-flap 13.
In arranging the sections for application the side iiaps 4 are turned inwardlyand secured by moistening the adhesive material on the 8o tongue 6 and simultaneously bending in the tongues 7 and 8 and sealing tongue 7 to the body 3. The one section is then ready for application over one corner of one of the book backs or bindings, and the opposite section is similarly prepared and, positioned reversely to the iirst section applied over the remaining book back or binding. The two sections are then united by moistening the adhesive material 15, which, it will be understood, is pref- 9o erably applied on one section or thatl having its edge 12 exteriorly exposed at the back. To complete the application of the temporary cover, the folds 13 are inturned, preferably in one instance over the adjacent part of Athe flap 4, and then the two substantially covered by the inturned tongue S of the opposite section, and at the other corner the similarly-inturned tongue 8 is caught beneath the adjacent portion of the iiap 4 of the section havroo The tongues 6, 7, and S 7o e masse ing its tongue turned in over the iiap 13, and the Hap 13 at said opposite corner is bent in over the inelosed tongue 8 and a portion of the flap 4 of the same section, and the temporary cover is firmly secured in place against accidental disengagement.
It will be observed that when the temporary cover is applied, as clearly shown, the line of connection of the two sections will extend diagonally across the back of the book and the bindings thereof, and thereby be free from pulling or separating strain and materially superior to the form of book-covers having closing-seams running in lines parallel with the center of the back or along opposite top and bottom edges. Afurther advantage of the present construction is the simplicity and rapidity of adj ustin the section squarely andy snugly to the book backs or bindings.
The covers are made in different sizes and each size is adjustable to fit different books or those having variations in dimensions withina certain limit. The improved device requires less stock in its construction than other devices of a similar character heretofore produced, and at the top back edge of the book asmooth surface is always provided on the cover, on which may be written the title, number, rbc., of the book. A further advantage is in the manner of providing the intermediate tongues and forming the recesses 10 and 11 inside of the plane of the folding-line of said tongues and then continuing the said recesses into the adjacent edges of the tongues 6 and 8 above the folding-line. Then the device is applied, by this construction just referred to, no strain comes on the edge of the cover at such points when the book isopen, and the improved device is reinforced ata portion thereof where, in most covers, as heretofore made, a great weakness exists.
Changes iu the form, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A book-cover of the character set forth, comprising in its complete make-up two du- ;plicate triangular sections which have their meeting edges joined and the joint extended diagonally across the central connecting portion of the back of the book to which the cover is applied.
2. A book-cover comprising separate secv tions having diagonal edges adapted to be joined and also provided with iiaps and tongues on different sides which are reversely arranged in the opposite sections, the
diagonal joint of the said sections extending across the central connecting portion of the back of the book to which the cover isv applied.
3. A book-cover of the character set forth, comprisingseparate sections of duplicate-contour adapted to be joined on a diagonal line across the back of the book towhich they are engagement with the hinge portion of the book, recesses extending inwardly on opposite sides of the intermediate tongues and having the adjacent edges of outer and inner tongues gradually merging thereinto.
4. A blank for a section of a temporary book-cover having a substantially-triangular form and provided withv an outer sideflfap, outer intermediate and inner tongues on one edge and a closing-Hap on the opposite edge, the edge between the inner tongue and the said closing-flap being in a diagonal plane.
In testimony that I claimv the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixedmy signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELLSWORTI-I M. PAGE.
