MEANS FOR SEALING BOTTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,533, dated May 23, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LUCAS BARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Sealing Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for sealing bottles of that class embodying a frangible cap and locking devices whereby when the cap is once in place the contents'of the bottle cannot be withdrawn without breaking the cap. I

The novelty in the present instance resides in the peculiar construction and the combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawing, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.

The drawing represents a vertical section of a bottle protected by the improved seal.

Referring to the drawing, A is the bottle* neck, formed with an annular collar and above this collar with a hole a, extending through the wall of the neck.

Bis an elastic cork fitting tightly within the neck and serving to force outward the pin hereinafter described.

0 is a cap of frangible material, preferably of thin porcelain, molded to conform to and loosely inclose the mouth and upper portion of the bottle-neck. It is swelled at G to provide for the internal groove 0, which lies adjacent to the opening a when the cap is in place on the bottle.

D is a cylindrical pin disposed within the hole a of the neck and held outward by the elasticity of the cork, so that its outer end will engage in the groove 0 ofthe cap. When the cap is forced into place, the pin enters the groove 0, and thus locked the cork cannot be withdrawn until the cap is broken by light blows of a suitable instrument and removed. The cap should be of a thickness to with stand the ordinary usage to which the bottle is subjected in transportation and handling and yet sufliciently fragile to be easily broken when required. The cap maybe ornamented and may bear the name or trade-mark of the manufacturers or dealers and affords a neat and attractive finish to the bottle.

I claim The combination with a bottle having its neck provided with an opening extending through the wall thereof, of a cork within the neck of the bottle, a pin in said opening and held outward by the elasticity of the cork,

and a frangible cap embracing the neck and having an annular groove to receive the outer end of said pin when the cap is in place, substantially as shown and described.
