1).. EDWARDS. BOTTLE.
N0. 572,477. Patented Dec. 1', 1896.
A NOR/VH8.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOLPH EDWARDS, OF SANFORD, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN C. 'IHORPE, OF SAME PLACE.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,477, dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed July 8,1896. Serial No. 598,417. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOLPH EDWARDS, of Sanford, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved bottle, seekin g to provide a simple construction which cannot be refilled without showing the partial destruction of the bottle; and the invention consists in the novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
I11 the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of a bottle-constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2. is a partial longitudinal sect-ion thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showin g the key adjusted for a non -refilling bottle, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section showing the key as when the bottle is to be used in the ordinary manner.
The bottle A may be of any suitable design, its neck 13 being of sufficient length to receive both the sealing-plug O and the securing-plug D. This B neck is provided at about its middle with an external groove E and an internal groove e, such grooves being circumferential opposite each other and equal, so the bottle may be easily breakable at such point and in such manner that no slivers will be formed in breaking, the neck separating with a clean mouth for pouring or drinking. Above this pair of grooves E ethe neck is provided with an internal groove F, preferably formed in a circumferential direction and extending nearly or quite around the neck, a perforation being formed at f through the bottle-neck leading to said groove F.
. In practice after the bottle is filled the sealing-plug O is inserted 'to a point below the grooves E e, and the securing-plug D is inserted above the grooves E e and secured as presently described. This plug is of suitable material. It maybe glass or similar material, and it is inserted with its upper end at or below the upper end of the neck. The plug D has an external groove h, which, when such plug is inserted, coincides with the groove F and registers with the opening f, so the key I may be inserted through said opening to fit in the coincident grooves h and F to lock-the securing-plug in place. This key I may be of wire or other suitable material and may be arranged with a protruding portion, so the key may be Withdrawn when it is desired to use the bottle in the ordinary manner, while for a non-refilling bottle the wire should be of such length andshould be driven entirely in, so it cannot be withdrawn, thus locking the cap in place so the contents of the bottle cannot be withdrawn without first breaking the neck at E e and then drawing the sealing-plug.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The neck having an internal circumferen tial groove and a perforation leading thereto through which the key may be insorted, the securing-plug having an external circumferential groove and fitted in the neck with the said grooves in register or coincident and the'key in said grooves and locking the securing-plug in place substantially as shown 7 5 and described.
2. The improved bottle herein described comprising the neck provided internally and externally with circumferential grooves arranged opposite each other and provided above said grooves with an internalcircumferential groove and with a perforation leading thereto through which the key may be inserted, the sealing-plug fitting in said neck below its said pair of grooves, the securingplug fitted in the neck above the pair of grooves and having an external groove and the key all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A bottle-neck having an internal groove,
tion of the locking-key substantially as shown and described.
DOLPI-I EDW'ARDS.
W'itnesses:
F. F. FoRsTER, II. C. TUXBURY.
