Description

UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD C. SMITH, OF NEWBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES S. BRUNDAGE AND GEORGE R. MITCHELL, OF SAME PLACE.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent l \To. 594,763, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed March 31, I897. $erial No, 630,068. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bottles, the object of the same being to provide a bottle adapted to hold medicines, liquors, and other like substances which cannot be refilled after the contents thereof have once been removed. A
The invention consists of a bottle having a neck at the upper end thereof with a circumferential groove in its outer surface, the extreme upper end of said neck being slightly contracted and formed with internal screwthreads, a cork of ordinary construction fitting within the lower end of said neck, and
a ball stopper of porcelain, glass, or other like material adapted to be screwed into the upper end of said neck and to rest upon the top surface of said cork.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a bottle constructed according to my invention with the cork and stopper in place therein.
The bottle 1 has a neck 2 at its upper end, with a circumferential groove or weakened portion 3 therein, as clearly shown. The extreme upper end of the neck 2 is slightly contracted and formed -with internal screwthreads 4. Fitting within the lower end of the neck 2 is a cork 5, of ordinary construction. A ball 6, having screw-threads adapted to mesh with those at the upper end of the neck 2, rests upon the top surface of the cork 5.
My improved bottle is filled in the usual manner and then the cork 5 is inserted, the same being located at a point below the circumferential groove 3. The ball 6 is then inserted by screwing it into the neck through the screw-threads 4. It therefore fits loosely upon the upper surface of the cork 5. When once in place, the said ball cannot be removed and the bottle cannot be opened except by breaking the neck thereof. This is done by giving a sharp blow to the upper end of the neck 2, cracking the same along the line of the circumferential groove 3. The cork 5 is then drawn out by a corkscrew or in any other suitable manner. I
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described non-refillable bottle having a neck at. the upper end thereof with a circumferential groove in its outer surface,
and the extreme end of said neck slightly contracted and formed with internal screwthreads, a cork fitting within the lower end of said neck, and a ball having suitable threads thereon which adapt it to be inserted through the contracted end of said neck, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- EDWARD 0. SMITH. Witnesses: GEORGE F. BROTZMANN, FRANCIS M. OANTINE.
