TaTnnT EDWARD E. GORE, OF NEWVBURG, NEIV YORK.
NON-=REFILLABLE BOTTLE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,118, dated July 26, 1898.
Application filed January 20, 1898. Serial No. 667,296. (No model.)
. the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the top part of bottle and stopper. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing a modified form of stopper, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the modified form with the top removed.
This invention has relation'to non-refi11able I bottles of that class which are provided with a supplemental neck portion which must be broken off before access can be had to the cork or stopper for the purpose of removing the same; and it is designedto provide a bottle of this nature with a supplemental breakable neck portion and stoppering devices of improved character.
With this object in viewthe invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended'claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a bottle having a neck portion proper at B and asupplemcntal neck portion or extension 0, which is of larger diameter both internally and externally than the neck portion proper. This supplemental neck portion is formed with an internal thread I) and is designed to seat therein a screw-stopper O, which is preferably of glass. The screw-thread b does not extend entirely to the bottom of the supplemental neck, but is separated from the orifice of the neck proper by a. contracted portion D, having an inwardly tapered or beveled bottom wall, and which is designed to form a space for the reception of sealing-wax orlike material, as indicated.
E designates the usual stopper, which is seated in the neck proper below the space D.
This stopper is preferably of rubber with-an enlarged head portion.
The supplemental neck portion is formed in one piece, which extends up into the contracted portion D of the supplemental neck with the neck proper, and just above the point Where it joins the latter it'is weakened by one or more small openings 7t.
In scaling up the bottle the stopper E is first inserted and thespace D filled with sealingwax or the like, this filling making a seal which prevents any air from entering the bottle through the openings h. The glass stopper O is then inserted and screwed to its seat, being first sufficiently coated with cement, which when set prevents the stopper from being withdrawn. In moving to its seat the glass stopper comes in contact with the enlarged head of the stopper E and expands said head laterally to fill the surrounding bevel-Wall portion of the orifice. The top of this stopper is designed to seat flush with the top edge of the supplemental neck, as shown.
To open the bottle, the supplemental neck is broken off at the line where it is weakened by the openings h. The stopper E is then withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a bottle having a a neck portion proper, and a supplemental neck portion enlarged both externally and internally, the inner wall of said supplemental neck'po-rtion being formed with an internal screw-thread, and below said thread beveled or contracted inwardly to meet the orifice of the neck portion proper, an outer threaded stopper seated in the threaded portion of said supplemental neck, and secured therein, and an inner stopper of elastic material seated in the neck proper and having an enlarged head portion which extends up into the beveled or contracted portion thereof, the lateral Wall of said supplemental neck portion being weakened, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD E. GORE.
