UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED D. BOARDMAN, OF SUMNER, WASHINGTON.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 562,794, dated June 30, 1896. Application filed November 13, 1895- Serial No. 568,790. iNo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED D. BOARDMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sumner, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formin g a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels, and the object thereof is to provide a vessel which having been once filled cannot be entirely emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact, and thus showing that the bottle or other vessel has been once used.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a central vertical section of abottle provided with my improvement.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown my invention applied to a bottle; and in the practice of said invention I provide a bottle or other vessel A, which may be of any desired form and in the upper end of which is formed a cavity or depression, as shown at B, from the center of which projects the neck 0, and said neck 0 is adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper D in the usual manner.
By means of the central depression B in the top or upper end of the bottle there is formed an annular chamber or cavity E, as clearly shown in the drawing, and said annular chamher or cavity E may be of any desired size, depth, or capacity, this feature depending entirely upon the depth of the cavity or depression B, and formed at any desired point in the upper wall of the annular chamber E is a small port or opening G, which is closed by a cap II, and this port or opening G and the cap I-I may be of any desired form, and said cap is also composed of glass or of the material of which the bottle or vessel is composed.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
The bottle is filled through the neck Gin the usual manner and closed by the usual plug or stopper, and whenever it is desired to discharge a portion of its contents it is only necessary to remove said stopper, when the larger portion of the contents of the bottle may be discharged in the usual manner. It is intended, however, that the annular chan1- ber E will hold a quantity of the contents of the bottle which will be much greater in value than the bottle itself; and the'only way that this can be got out is by breaking 0d the cap H and discharging the same through the port or passage G, and this operation will be evidence of the fact that the bottle has been used or once filled and emptied of its contents.
I may also place on the cap H a trademark or the name of the proprietor or manufacturer of the contents of the vessel, and this, as will be readily understood, will also constitute an additional safeguard or protection, as the absence of said trade-mark or the name of the manufacturer or owner of the contents of the bottle will be additional proof that the bottle has been once used, and it will be understood that said cap cannot be broken off and again replaced without leaving evidence of the fact.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bottle or jug, substantially as herein shown and described, in the upper end of which is formed an annular cavity or depression, from the center of which projects the neck which is adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper, whereby an annular chamber or cavity is formed in the upper end of thebottle, and formed in the upper wall of the annular chamber E is a small port or opening, which is closed by a cap composed of glass or similar material, whereby the small quantity of the contents remaining in the bottle may be discharged through the myinventionlhave signed myname, in pressmall opening in the annular chamber, the ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4tl1-day mutilation of which opening will prove that of November, 1895.
the bottle has been emptied of its original ALFRED D. BOARDMAN. 5 contents, all arranged and operating as and Vitnesses:
for the purpose set forth. JOHN B. KRAUS,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as MILTON F. CLEMENTS.
