NON-FILLABLE BOTTLE.

Be it known that I, LnoroLn PHILIP STRAUBE, a citizen of the United States, re siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Fillable Bottles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and. similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which having been once filled cannot be emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact that it has been once filled and emptied.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown my invention applied to a bottle, said drawing being a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle provided with myimprovement; and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which said drawing forms a part and in which the separate parts of the construction which I employ are designated by the same numerals of reference.
In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle or other vessel having a neck 6, and said neck is inwardly contracted at a predetermined distance above the bottom portion of the bottle or vessel, as shown at 7 this contraction being such as to form a deep annular groove around the neck of the bottle and an inwardly directed annular shoulder 8 within said neck.
Mounted within the neck of the bottle above the inwardly-directed annular shoulder is an annular packing 9, composed of cork or similar material, and above the packing 9 is a plug 10, which is provided on its lower side with a cylindrical downwardly-direeted extension 11, which passes through the annular packing 9 and is adapted to closely fit therein.
The plug 10, or the body portion thereof, is so formed as to closely fit the inner walls of the neck, and formed in the sides thereof are vertical chambers or recesses 11, and transversely thereof is formed a passage 12, and a metal spring 13 is passed through the passage 12 and curved into the form of a bow, and the ends thereof extend upwardly and are adapted to enter an annular groove 14,
formed in the inner walls of the neck of the bottle, and the outer walls of the neck are provided with an annular bead 15, which corresponds with the annular groove 14.
In practice the bottle or vessel is first filled with the desired contents, after which the annular packing 9 is forced into position on the extension 11 of the plug 10, and said plug is then forced downwardly into the neck of the bottle until the annular packing rests on the shoulder 8 and the ends of the spring 13 enter the annular groove 14. In this position of the parts it will be impossible to remove the plug 10, and the neck of the bottle may be closed by an ordinary cork or stopper when desired.
, lVhenever it is desired to empty the bottle or discharge a portion of its contents, the neck is broken olf at the annular groove 7, and the breaking off of the neck forms an inwardlydirected annular flange 16 on that part thereof which remains on the bottle and the bottle will be practically useless.
The breaking oif of the upper portion of the neck will also be proof of the fact that the bottle has been filled and emptied, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which does not add materially to the cost of the bottle or vessel.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described non-fillable bottle having a neck inwardly contracted at a pre determined distance above the body portion of said bottle, the construction being such as to form a deep annular groove around the said neck and an inwardly-directed annular shoulder therein, said neck being provided with an annular packing which is mounted on the upper portion of said shoulder, said packing being provided with a central opening, and said neck being provided with a passes a metal spfinghavingthe ends theremy invention 1 have signedmyname, in pres of curved upwardlyinto said chambers, said ence of the subscribingwitnesses; this 18th I neek'being provided withan annnlangroove day of January,'l897.
