To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENos G. POLLARD, of Holt, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvem ents in Bottles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of botiles having means to prevent the fraudulent refilling.
The object of this invention is to provide a bottle so constructed thata portion thereof must be broken olif before the contents can be discharged, thereby providing proof that the bottle has been reiilled should it be pre- I5 sented in its broken condition.
I will describe a bottle embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 2o drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the neck portion of a bottle embodying` my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a sealingstopper employed, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the bottle as sealed.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the neck portion of a bottle of glass or similar 3o iictile material, and A' is an integral sealing extension thereon, and upon this sealing eX- tension a trade-mark o may be placed. A groove a is formed at the juncture of the neck A and the sealing extension A for the purpose of'reducing the thickness of the glass at this point, so that the extension may be easily broken from the neck by a blow from a suitable implement. I have here shown the groove d' as formed in the exterior of the 4o parts, but it may be formed in the interior without departing from the spirit of my invention. If desired, a bead may be formed around the upper end of the neck to thicken the .saine at the junction to preven t the breaking of the neck end.
From the junction o the interior wall of the extension A is tapered inward and the inner wall of the neck A may be tapered inward from the junction o', but this is not ab- 5o solutely necessary. The interior upper portion of the sealing extension has an annular shoulder o2, and an annular flange a3 extends upward therefrom.
B is the sealing-stopper, made of any suitable material, such, for instance, as glass. It 5 5 has a body portion l), flared upward and inward to correspond substantially to the flare of the interior wall of the extension A', and the upper smaller end of the body portion is provided with a head b', having a diameter to 6o iit easily yet snugly within the flange a3, so that an instrument cannot be inserted to cX- tract the stopper. Preferably, when the stopper is in place, its upper surface will be below the top of the iiange, and I therefore make the flange of a greater height than the thickness of the head ZJ of the stopper.
In using this bottle after the desired liquid shall have been placed therein an ordinary cork h2 is forced into the position shown in 7o Fig. 3, and then a suitable cement lb3 is placed thereon within the extension A. IVhile the cement is in a soft or yielding state the stopper B is forced therein, causing the cement to iill the space between the body portion of the stopper and the wall of the extension. After the cement shall have become hard the stopper B will be securely keyed within thc sealing extension, so that it cannot be removed to gain access to the cork h2. This 8o cork lf2 may be removed only after breaking the extension-piece from the neck, and this breaking off of the sealing extension and the consequent destruction of the trade -mark thereon will make the bottle of no further 8 5 use as an original package, as a purchaser of such broken bottle would, by the absence of the seal, be notified of the spurious article in the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, I 9o claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A bottle, comprising a neck portion, an extension of the neck having its inner surface tapering inward, the said bottle having a groove formed at the junction of the neck and extension, whereby the extension maybe readily broken from the neck, a shouldered and iianged portion at the top of said extension, and a sealing-stopper having a head roo portion and a body portion tapering outward from the'head, and adaptedto be keyed in the extension, substantially as specified.
