To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zearing, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention, in common with like devices, has for its object to prevent the reuse of a bottle, receptacle, or like package after once being opened without making detection possible, since the construction is such as to render mutilation of the bottle or package necessary before access can be had to the contents thereof.

The bottle or package is provided with a raised bottom having a pendent stem required to be broken off before the liquid contents may bedrawn off.

The bottle is filled in the usual manner and is sealed by a non-removable closure, the contents thereof being removed through the outlet in the bottom resulting from snapping off of the aforesaid stem. A cap protects the stem to prevent breaking thereof in the usual handling to which the bottle is subjected.

The invention consists of the novel features additional to those heretofore mentioned and of the peculiar combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated, and claimed.

In the drawings hereto attached and forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a bottle embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the bottle as seen from the bottom, the cover being removed.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The bottle or analogous receptacle or package is indicated at 1, and its neck 2 is provided with an inner groove 3. The bottom 4 of the bottle is raised, leaving a pendent portion or rim 5, inclosing a space 6, which is covered by the closure or cap 7. To prevent casual displacement of the cover or cap 7, the

lower edge of the rim 5 is beaded or outbottle or package.

A tube 8 is pendent from the bottom 4 and I is closed at its outer or lower end and is adapted to bebroken ofif when it is required to pour off the contents of the bottle. The tube 8 is of frangible material, so as to be readily broken, and any instrument may be provided for snapping the same. As shown, a wrench or tool 9 has been devised and for convenience is located in the space 6 and is prevented from being lost by the cover or cap 7. One end of the tool is provided with an opening or ring for reception of the tube 8, the handle of the tool'being of such relative length as to facilitate the snapping of the tube when used as a lever after the apertured end has been fitted over the tube.

The bottle or package is supplied to the party or concern to be filled with the particular brand of goods with the wrench 9 and cover 7 in place and is adapted to be filled in the usual way. After the bottle has been filled it is sealed in a manner to prevent removal of the closure and toprevent access being had to the contents except by snapping off of the tube 8. As shown, the closure consists of a stopper 10, preferably of glass, having a groove 11 to register with the groove 3.

A lock-spring 12 is fitted to the stopper so as to spring into the grooves 3 and 11 and prevent removal of the stopper after the latter has been pressed home into the neck of the The inner end of the stopper is provided with suitable packing 13 to prevent leakage and insure the formation of a tight joint.

A bottle or package embodying the invention cannot be opened to draw ofi the contents without removing the cover or cap 7 and snapping off the tube 8, thereby mutilating the bottle to such an extent as to prevent its reuse without detection by the average observing person.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A sealed bottle or package having a depressed portion and provided with a tube projected into the depression and adapted to be broken off to admit of access being had to the contents of the bottle, and a cap closing the depression and providing a protection for the aforesaid tube to prevent injury thereto in the ordinary handling of the bottle, substantially as set forth.

2. A bottle or like package having its bottom raised and provided with a tube pendent from the bottom and extended into the space formed by the pendent portion of the body, a tool for breaking off said tube arranged in the space below the bottom, and a coverfor retaining the tool in place and affording protection for the tube, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination, a bottle or like package having its body portion projected below the bottom to form a space and having a tube projected from the bottom into said space, a closure secured within the neck of the bottle against removal, a tool for breaking off said pendent tube arranged within the space below the bottom, and a cover fitted to the pendent portion of the body and closing the space below the bottom and protecting the tube from injury and retaining the tool in place, substantially as specified.
