NON-REMOVABLE CAP FOR BOTTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,649, dated April 2'7, 1897. Application filed August 4, 1896. Serial No- GOLGSQ. (N0 model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that. I, WALLAcE CLINTON BARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non- Removable Caps for Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in caps for bottles and means for locking the same, whereby it will be impossible to remove the cork without first destroying the cap or breaking the neck of the bottle on which the cap is locked.

A further part of the invention consists in the provision of a cap which is designed to carry spring-strips in its interior walls, the upper free ends of which are adapted to bear against the under edge of a rim about the neck of the bottle to prevent the cap from being removed from the bottle, thus making it impossible to pour out the contents of the bottle until the cap or neck of the bottle shall have been broken.

To these ends and to such others as the illvention may pertain the same consists, fur ther, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then spe cifically defined in the appended claims.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, wit-h the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a cap and neck of a bottle, showing the cap locked in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the neck of a bottle, showing a vertical section through a cap in a position ready to be pushed down in a locked relation. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a cross-sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective of one of the spring-arms which holds the cap locked to the neck of the bottle.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the neck of a bottle which has a flange or rim B about its upper end. The cap 0, which is of a diameter to snugly fit, as to its inner wall, the outside of the neck of the bottle, is provided with an annular recess 0 near its lower end, in which recess the L-shaped ends of the springs D are adapted to be held, the free ends of which are slightly bent inward,so that when the cap carrying the same is placed over the top of the corked neck of a bottle the free or upper ends of the said springs will normally rest under the flange or bead B of the neck, thus making it impossible to remove the cap without either destroying the cap or the neck of the bottle.

If desired, the springs may be used again after the cap has been broken, as they are not fastened in the groove therein,they1nerely being of such a size as to snuglyfit the groove in which they are held.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A non-ren1ovable frangible cap for bottles consisting of a cap having an annular recess in its inner wall, a series of L-shaped spring-strips held in said recess, with their upper free ends outwardly inclined, and designed to normally rest under the bead about the neck of a bottle, when the cap is placed on the latter, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with the neck of a bottle having a bead B, a frangible cap 0 having an inner annular recess near the lower end of the cap, and the L-shaped springs having their angled ends held in said recess, with the upper ends of the springs upwardly and inwardly inclined and adapted to bear against the under side of the said bead, substantially as shown and described.
