JOHN FITCHIE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
'STOPPER FO SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNoQ 578,555, dated March 9,
Application filed March 18,1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JOHN FITOHIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottles and similar vessels which-are designed for holding beer, mineral water, and similar fluids; and the object thereof is to provide a cork or stopper which is secured to the neck in the manner usual in this class of devices and which is retained therein by a spring-yoke and which is adapted to be used any desired number of times, a further object being to provide a stopper of this class which is of peculiar and novel construction; and with these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improved stopper.
In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle A, having a neck B, near the upper end of which is formed an outwardly-directed annular shoulder Z), and passing around the neck below said annular shoulder is a spring band or ring D, which is provided with a yoke E, in which are formed at each end thereof spring loops or rings F, in which is mounted a yoke or bail G, the ends of which are provided with inwardly-directed arms g, which pass through the spring rings or loops F.
The yoke G is provided with a transverse head 9 and I also provide a stopper K, which is preferably conical in form and the base of which is directed outwardly, and said stopper secured to the outer end or base thereof by means of a spiral wire spring or similar device M, which passes downwardly through the stopper and is provided with a hook or head m, and secured to the plate K or the upper R BOTTLES.
Serial No. 583,699. (No model.)
surface thereof is a loop or ring O, through which the transverse head g of the bail 0r yoke G passes. 1
The stopper K is composed of cork, though other material may be employed, if desired.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description-when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
lVhenever it is necessary to cork or seal the bottle, the yoke or bail G is turned over the top thereof, as shown in the drawing, and in this operation the stopper K is forced downwardly into the neck, and the yoke E is then depressed into the position shown.
\Vhenever it is desired to unseal the bottle, the yoke E is raised and the yoke or bail G is pulled to one side.
This device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and by means thereof a bottle maybe securely sealed regardless of the character of its contents.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I The herein-described bottle having a neck B, near the upper end of which is formed an outwardly-directed annular shoulderb, below which is mounted a spring band or ring D pro vided with a yoke E, in which are formed near each end thereof spring-rings F, in which are mounted the ends 9 of the bail G, and mounted on the transverse head of said bail is aco'nical stopper K provided with a cap-plate 7a which is secured to the outer end or base of the stopper, by means of a spiral spring M, which passes downwardly through the stopper, and is provided with a hook or head m, on'the upper surface of which is formed a ring 0,
through which the transverse head of said bail passes, all constructed and adaptedto operate as herein set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of March, 1896.
JOHN FITOHIE. Witnesses:
O. GERST, O. G. MILLIN.
