UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrca OICERO DELMARTII DUNCAN, OF NEW BERNIE, NORTH CAROLINA.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,565, dated August 25, 1896. Application filed October 9, 1895, Serial No, 565,137. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CIOERO DELMARIH DUN- CAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Borne, in the county of Craven and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars,
and similar vessels, and the object thereof is to produce a vessel of this class which, having been once filled and sealed, cannot be opened and emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact that the vessel has been once used. This object I accomplish by means of the construction hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improvement.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my invention applied to a bottle, and in the practice of my invention I provide a bottle A, having a neck 13, within which, near the lower end thereof, is formed an annular shoulder 5.
At a predetermined distance above the annular shoulder 12 and in the outer walls of the neck of the bottle is formed an annular groove O, adapted to receive a rubber packing or ring D, and formed in the neck and communieating with said annular groove and the interior thereof are a number of small bores or passages E.
In this class of devices the bottle must first be filled before the neck attachment is applied, and after my improved bottle has been filled with the desired contents I force into the neck thereof a plug or stopper F, composed of cork or similar material, and above the plug or stopper F is arranged a disk or plate G, of pasteboard or similar material, and the arrangement is such that the upper surface of the disk or plate G will come about even with the annular groove 0 or the passages or openings e, and after the plate or disk G has been placed in position I fill in the space above said plate or disk with cement,
as shown at H, said cement being of any desired quality and being placed in the neck or nozzle, as described, in a fluid state, and when it has been allowed to set it cannot be removed without breaking off the top of the neck B.
Whenever it is desired to empty the bottle, the neck or nozzle is broken oil? at the annular groove 0, and in this operation the disk or plate G, which will adhere to the cement, is removed therewith, and the plug or stopper F may then be removed in the usual manner.
The object of the annular packing-rim g D is to form a partial protection for the neck and also to close the passages or openings E, and it will be observed that the breaking oil of the neck or nozzle of the bottle, as above described, will constitute evidence of thefact that the bottle has once been used; and I may also place upon the upperportion of the neck or that portion which is adapted to be broken away the name of the manufacturer of the bottle or the owner or proprietor of the contents thereof, or any desired trade-mark, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and one which is comparatively inexpensive.
The object of the passages or openings E is similar to that of the annular grooves 0, both of which serve to weaken the neck of the bottle at this point, so that it may be more readily and easily broken off, and it will be understood that the bottle, plug, or stopper and the disk G may all be manufactured by the same party, if desired, or Separately or in any desired manner, and my invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a non-refillable bottle the neck of which is provided near the lower portion thereof with an inwardly-directed annular flange or shoulder, said neck having an exterior annular groove or recess ICO of the bottle to close the opening communioating therewith substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionlhave signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 2d day of October, 1895.
CIOERO DELMARTH DUNCAN.
