SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,534, dated August 11, 1896.

Application filed June 2, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LENA Doscnnn, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Oharlestonand State of South O'arolina,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which having been once filled and sealed cannot be opened or emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which I have shown my invention applied to a bottle, and in whicl1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a side view of the neck at right angles to that of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle 5, having a neck 6, the walls of the upper end of which are thinner than thewalls of the lower part thereof, as shown at 7, and around the base of the upper part is formed an annular groove at 8, in which is placed a wire 9.

The upper part 7 of the neck is also provided on its opposite sides with a vertical groove 10 and corresponding notches or recesses 11 in the top thereof, and the lower part 6 of the neck is adapted to be sealed or closed by a cork or stopper 12 in the usual manner, and I also provide a plug 13 of glass or similar material, in the lower portion of which is formed a vertical bore -or passage 14, in which is placed a vertically-movable plug 15, of metal or any preferred material, and transversely of the plug or stopper 13 is a bore or passage 16, through which is passed a key-bolt 17, having a triangular notch or recess 18 in the lower side thereof, and the upper end of the vertically- Serial No. 598,961. and adapted to enter said notch or recess, and one of the key-bolts 17, is beveled or inclined, as shown at 18, and the key-bolt 17 is triangular in cross-section and passes through tri angular openings 19 in the opposite sides of the upper portion of the neck. I also provide awedge-shaped plate 20, which is adapted to be suspended from a loop or ring formed in the wire line, and in practice the bottle or vessel 5 is first filled with the required contents, after which the cork 12 is forced into position, and said cork passes below the upper portion 7 of the neck. The bolt 15 is then inserted into the vertical bore 14: in the plug or stopper 13, and said plug or stopper is inserted into the neck, after which the key-bolt 17 is passed through said neck and through the transverse bore or passage 16 in said plug or stopper 13, and in this operation the inclined surface 18 on one end thereof strikes the wedge-shaped end of the plug 15 and forces it downwardly, the material of the cork 12 yielding-to permit of this operation, and when the upper end of the plug 15 reaches the notch or recess 18 it is forced upwardly thereinto by the cork 12.

The plug or stopper 15 and the cork 12 cannot be removed without breaking off the upper part of the neck, and this is preferably done by means of the wedge-shaped plate 20, which is inserted into the notches 11, said wedge being wide enough to extend across the top of the neck, and said wedge is then given a turn which results in splitting out or breaking off the separate sides of the part 7 of the neck along the vertical grooves 10. The entire upper part of the neck may also be broken off at the annular groove 8 in any desired manner, and the breaking off of this portion of the neck will be proof that the bottle has been once filled and emptied.

It will be understood that the cork 12 may be easily withdrawn after the upper portion of the neck has been broken off, and I ,may also place on said upper portion a trade-mark or the name of the proprietor or manufacturer of the contents of the bottle or vessel.

It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation movable bolt 15 is also wedge-shaped in form and which does not add materially to the cost of the bottle or vessel.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck the walls of the upper portion of which are thinner than the lower portion, said upper portion being also provided in its opposite sides with holes or openings, said neck being adapted to be closed by a plug or stopper of glass or similar material, havinga central vertical bore in the lower side thereof, which communicates with a transverse bore or passage, said vertical bore or passage being adapted to receive a vertically-movable plug having a wedge-shaped upper end, and said transverse bore or passage being adapted to receive a key-bolt having a wedge-shaped notch or recess in thelower side thereof, substantially as shown and described.

2. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck, the walls of the upper portion of which are thinner than the lower portion, said upper portion being also provided in its opposite sides with holes or openings, and the lower portion of said neck being adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper in the usual manner, and the upper portion by a plug or stopper of glass or similar material having a central vertical bore in the lower side thereof, which communicates with a transverse bore or passage, said vertical bore or passage being adapted to receive a. vertically-movable plug, having a wedge-shaped upper end, and said transverse bore or passage being adapted to receive a key-bolt, having a wedgeshaped notch or recess in the lower sidethereof, and said upper portion being also provided with a vertical groove in its opposite sides and corresponding notches orrecesses in the top thereof, substantially as shown and described.

3. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck the walls of the upper portion of which are thinner than the lower portion, said upper portion being also provided in its opposite sides with holes or openings and the lower portion of said neck being adapted to be closed by a cork or stopper in the usual manner, and the upper portion by a plug or stopper of glass or similar material having a central vertical bore in the lower side thereof, which communicates with a transverse bore or passage said vertical bore or passage being adapted to receive a vertically-movable plug, having a wedge-shaped upper end, and said transverse bore or passage being adapted to receive a key-bolt, having a wedge-shaped notch or recess in the lower side thereof, and said upper portion being also provided with a vertical groove in its opposite sides and corresponding notches or recesses in the top thereof, and with an annular groove around the bottom thereof, in which is placed a wire with which is connected a wedge shaped plate, substantially as shown and described.
