Description

(No Model.) P. SKINNER.
PIPE HANGER AND- SHIELD FOR BICYCLE RIDERS.
, Patented June 7, 189 8.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK SKINNER, OF {PHILADELPHIAyIBENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE-HANGER AND SHIELD FOR BICYCLE-"RIDERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 605,142, dated June f, 1898.; Application filed October 13, 1897. Serial No. 655,09l-i (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SKINNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, (Overb'roolg) in the countyof Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin a Pipe- Hanger and Shield for Bicycle Riders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is a device whereby a tobacco-pipe bowl furnished with a flexible stem is combined by means of a v proper set-off with a shield to protect the garment of the user, said shield to serve as a club-badge. I may utilize the badges at present in use for my purpose.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, giving a view from the front, while Fig. 2 is'the same elevation exhibiting a View from the back. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of 'the'pipe,.showing the shield B and the loop O,"by -which it is attached to the pipe-bow] A. i Fig. at is a plan view of the loop 0 and its engagement with the shield B by means of the hooks E E. I
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the figures. V t
A is the pipe-bowl, grooved with the annular groove D, into which is fitted the loop 0, said loop being preferably a piece of resilient wire havingits ends E E bent back upon themselves to form hooks to engagewith the slot F in the shield B. A small space is left between said hooks in order that said loop may be contracted suliiciently to allow said hooks to engage with said slot.- Said loop expands of its own resiliency, and by this means said loop and the pipe-bowl carried in same may be attached to or detached from said shield. Said shield may beused as a badge, bearing inscriptions, as at G in Fig. 1, and on that account it is desirable that its facebe as free from objectionable features as possible.
H represents the pin by which said badge is attached to the garment.
The slot F,.on account of its being a small opening, does not disfigure the face of the shield. T In fact, badges at present in use among Wheelmen may be utilized by simply having the slot F cut in them.
I-Iaving now described my invention, what I claim, and desi re to secure by Letters Patent, is Z In combination a badge, acting'as a shield to protect the garmentand furnished with means for being attached to said garment, a tobacco-pipe boyvl provided with a horizontal annular groove, and a removable, resilient, open, wire loop, said badge and bowl being connected by means of said wire loop, which engages with said groove and by its hooked ends with a slot in said badge, substantially as described.
FRANK SKINNER.
