KNEE-PROTECTING ATTACHMENT FOR TROUSERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,550, dated October 26, 1897. Application filed August 12, 1897. Serial No. 647,969. (No model.)

Be it known that I, EDMUND H. LUNKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe, in the State of Colorado, have invented a certain new and useful Knee-Protecting Attachment for Boys Trousers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention has for its object the provision of a simple, convenient, and efficient knee-protecting attachment for boys trousers which have short legs terminating immediately above the knee and which are commonly worn with long stockings extending considerably above the knees within the trousers-legs, the purpose of-the attachment being to protect the knees of the stockings from wear when the boys are at play upon their knees.

The novelty of my invention, as set forth in my claims, will be apparent from the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the lower end of one leg of a pair of boys trousers having my novel knee-protecting attachment applied to it and in position for use; Fig. 2, a corresponding view with the flap of the trousers-leg turned upward to expose the connection of the attachment to the trousers-leg and with the elastic strap or band at the lower end of the attachment in position for folding up the attachment out of use; Fig. 3, a view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the attachment folded up into position beneath the flap of the trousers-leg, which position it occupies when not in use 5 and Fig. 4, a view corresponding to Fig. 2, showing the flap of the trousers-leg separated from the leg at both sides instead of at one side only, as in the preceding views.

The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.

The trousers-legA is slit along its outer side for a considerable distance from its bottom (at its right-hand side in the drawings) to form the usual flap B, whose free edge is provided with buttonholes to engage buttons at upon the body of the leg, as usual. Secured within the trousers-leg to the front side thereof neath the flap B. This piece 0 forms the support for the knee-protecting attachment D, and consists of some strong materialsuch as heavy duck, for instance.

The knee-protecting attachment D, which is shown as substantially square in the drawings, but which may be of any desired shape, is preferably made of thin soft leather or chamois-skin which will prevent the passage i of dust and dirt through it to the stockingknee beneath it. At its upper edge it is provided with a plurality of straps cl, preferably of elastic material, which are provided with buttonholes engaging buttons 6 upon the supporting fabric O. Instead, however, of this connection of the straps d to the fabric 0 they may be detachably connected to it in any other suitable manner or be sewed permanently to it. At its lower end the attachment D carries an elastic strap E, one end of which in the present instance is permanently secured to the rear face of the attachment D near its lower left-hand corner atf, and its opposite end is provided with a metal fastening-plate g, adapted to engage a button h upon the forward side of the attachment d at the lower righthand corner thereof. When the attachment D is in use, the strap E will be passed around the leg of the wearer and have its free end connected to the button It, as in Fig. 1, thus serving to hold the attachment D in position over the knee. When the attachment D is not in use, it will be folded up beneath the flap B of the trousers-leg, as in Fig. 3. Preparatory to folding it up to this position the strap E will be preferably passed through a slit 1' in the attachment D near the lower left-hand corner thereof, and thence across the outer face of the attachment and through a second set ate the rear side thereof, as in Fig. 2, leaving its right-hand end and its button-en gaging plate g projecting beyond the right-hand edge of the attachment D.

With the strap in this position when the attachment D is folded up beneath the trousersflap B, as in Fig. 3, the plate 9 of the strap may be engaged with the uppermost button a of the trousers-leg, as shown in said figure, to securely hold the attachment in place, and the flap B be then turned down and buttoned in position, as in'Fig. -1.

In Fig. 4 the trousers-flap B is shown separated from the trousers-leg at both sides and provided at both sides with a series of buttonholes to engage two sets of the buttons or at the opposite sides of the trousers-leg. In this View also there is shown an extra button 70, secured to the supporting fabric 0 near the middle of its upper edge, and the attachment D is provided at the middle of its lower edge with-a buttonhole Ladapted to engage such button when the attachment D is folded up into position beneath the flap B.

This means for securing the attachment D of the supporting fabric 0, secured within the trousers-leg beneath the flap B, and the knee-protecting attachment D supported at its upper end bythe fabric 0 and provided at its lower end "with the strap E adapted to encircle the leg and hold the attachment D in position upon the knee, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the trousers-leg A having the usual flap B at its lower end, of the supporting fabric 0, secured within the trousers-leg beneath the flap B, and the knee-protecting attachment D connected at its upper end to the fabric 0 by the elastic straps d and provided at its lower end with the strap E adapted to encircle the leg and hold the attachment in position upon the knee, substantially as described.-

The combination, with the trousers-leg A having the usual flap B at its lower end, of the supporting fabric 0 secured within the trousers-leg beneath the flap B and provided with the buttonsje, and the attachment D provided at its upper end with the straps 01 having buttonholes engaging the buttons 6, to detachably connect the attachment D to the supporting fabric 0; and provided at its lower end with the strap E adapted to encir-. cle the leg, and secure the attachment in p0-.
