COMBINATION BOX AND BLOTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,040, dated J' une 8, 189'?.

To atl whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS CLIFFORD KEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Holly, in the county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Box and Blotter, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speci fioation and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of an improved construction of a combined boxand blotter, by means of Whiohl am enabled to utilize the outersnrface of the device as a blotter, While A the space between the blotting-surfaces which is ordinarily Wasted can be employed as a receptacle for pens, postage-stamps, pencils, erasers, tbc. and other appurtenances, as may be desired.

It further consists of novel details of oonstruction, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and fully pointed out in the claims.v

Referring to the drawings, A designates a combined box and blotter, the same consisting of the upright side walls B, which are bent into substantially oval or oblong shape, as

indieated'in Fig. l, and have their ends terminating at the point B', it being noted that an end wall O is formed at the extremity opposite to B', said end Wall being continuous of said side Walls.

C designates the base oi' the box formed, which is removed a short distance from the lower edge of the sides B, against which are placed the upright inner Walls D of the receptacle or box D, it being noted that said Walls D terminate a short distance below the top edge of the sides B atthe point F, the bottom O being attached to said Walls D at the point E.

G designates a closure for the top of the box, the same extending from the end B of the latter toward the center thereof and having hinged thereto at the point H the lid or cover J, which is provided with the tab K, by means of which. the lid can be readily raised for the purpose of gaining access to the box D', it being noted that the upper Seria1No.629,903. Especial attention is called to the end Wall C and the function of the latter, since it affords a flat surface for the several thicknesses L of blotting-paper to be Wrapped around the free or outer end N of the blotting-paper, thus having a considerable surface by means of which it may be secured to the contiguous portion of blotting-paper by gluing or other means, as indicated at the left of Fig. l.V

The operation is as follows: Several thicknesses of blotting-paper are Wrapped around the upright side and end Walls B and O in the manner indicated in Fig. l, the free end N of the outer thicknesses of said blottingpaper being secured to the flattened portion M of the contiguous sheet by gluing or other- Wise, and when the outer Wrapping of blotting-paper has been used to the desired entent the same can be removed by cutting or tearing it at or near the front flattened Wall M. The interior chamber D can be employed for the reception of pens, pencils, erasers, and other appurtenances and is readily accessible at all times by lifting the lid K.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A combined box and blotterconsistingof outer and inner side Walls with a surrounding Wrapper of blotting material and a top and base on said inner Walls Within said outer Wall, said top having a lid hinged thereto.

2. A combined box and blotter consisting of the side and end Walls B and C', the base C removed from the edges of said side Walls, the top or cover G also removed from the opposite edges of said side Walls, the lid J hinged to said top, a series of thicknesses of blottingpaper wrapped around said Walls B and C', and means for securing the outer extremity of said blotting-paper in position.-

3. A combined box and blotter, the same consisting of the side and end Walls B, C, the base C, the inner Walls D, the top G, the lid J hinged to said top, and the Wrappings of blotting-paper L surrounding said Walls B and C'.
