Description
d 4UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARA A. BARTLETT, OF OAKLAND,ICALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE-SADDLES.
l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,875, dated August '7, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it knownfthat I, CLARA A. BARTLETT, of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and ing and attaching one of the horns of the sidesaddle upon and to its tree or frame that it can be dropped down into such a position as to allow the rider to mount or dismount with the greatest facility and ease and without the least danger of the skirts becoming caught upon such horn, which, with the side-saddles now in common use, oftentimes endangers not only the limbs but-the life of the rider.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in side-saddlesis illustrated, Figure 1 being a transverse section of a sidesaddle made according thereto `and taken in the plane of the line 00, Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section taken inthe plane of the line y y, Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 a plan View `of the under side of the seat of the saddle detached from its tree or framing.`
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents the tree or framing ofthe side-saddle, which may be made of the usual or any other proper construction, except so far as the present invention extends; B, its seat portion, provided with horns G and D, one upon each side, one of which, C, is fixed in position, while the other, D, is hinged to the seat so thatit `can be either swung up into a vertical position or down into a horizontal position, or nearly so, the said horn, when in a vertical position, being held there by means of a spring-catch, E, suitably arranged upon the under side-of the saddleseat to engage or interlock lwith `the notch or shoulder F, made in the lower end of the said horn D, and also prevented from swinging down too far by its said shoulder F coming to a rest against the shoulder G of the 'saddle-seat.
To relieve the spring-catch E from the hornnotch :F a rod, H, is hung in the seat of the saddle, in suitable position for its cam or eccentric portion I, as the said rod is turned by its head J upon the outside and front end of the saddle in the proper direction, to come to a bearing against the upper side of the said spring-catch, and, forcing it down, disengage it from the notch or shoulder of the horn.
From the above description of the manner in which one of the horns is secured and hung to the side-saddle, whereby such horn is ena-4 bled to be swung down into a horizontal position, or nearly so, it is plainly .apparent that farther forward or backward upon the tree,
according as may be necessaryr or desirable, any suitable means being provided for setting `it at such adjustment-as, for instance, a setscrew.
'Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A side-saddle having one of its horns arranged thereon and attached thereto so as to be operated substantially in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 4th day of April, 1866.
