Description
CHARLES n. vANosDEL,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 95,857, dated October 12, 1869.
IMPRovBD sTmRUP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. VAN Osnnrnvof Chicago, in the county of Gook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Stirrup; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my improved stirrup.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same, taken on the' plane of the line :c x, g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a stirrup which will form a support for the whole foot, which can be adjusted for any length of fhot, and which will swing around, to release the foot, in case the rider is thrown.
The invention consists- First, in making a strrup in form of a complete sole, with projecting counter and toe-covering, so that it will form a firm supportlfor the foot.
Secondly, in making the saine of two parts, so that it can'be longitudinally adjusted to fit any length of foot.
' Thirdly, in .swivelling its front end iu a ring, Suspended in one strap, and the rear end in another strap, so that it canswing around, to release the foot, if the rider is thrown off.
A, in the drawing, represents the sole of my iinproved stirrup, made of wood or other suit-able material; and provided with a toe-capf, made of leather or other material. v
C represents the heel-portion of the same, made separately, and fitted upon the sole.
is fastened by a screw, a, which passes through a slot in the sole, and which has a.:clamping-shoulder, I), as iig. 1.' The heelplate can thus be adjusted in.the.soleplate, to lengthen or sholteu the foot-suport.'
p A counter, c, is vformed on the heel-plate. The foot of the' iderlas; ouftliis; stirrup, a rm support, and-the'ruscle's are notalione'fst'rain'ed, ra s .with the ordinary stirrup, but the heel-hone is also used to aid in retaining a foothold.
The stirrup is suspended from two straps, D and E, in the following manner: l
To the end of the front strap D is secured a ring, F, which fits close around a ring, G, that is securely attached to the strrup, by rile-ans ofa plate or ear, d, projecting from the same.v The ring G is arranged on the front part of the strrup, and at the back end of the toe-cap B. It is provided with a feather, e, fitting into a groove of the ring F, or with flanges, or otherwise, to prevent lateral displacement.
The rear strap E is perforated near its lower end, and its perforation lined with an eyelet, and fitted over a pin, f, that projects from the counter, as shown.
The pin fsholuld be in line with the centre of the rings I G. The stirrup is thus swivelled in the two straps, and can swing, to release the foot, when lthe rider is thrown.
The upper ends ofthe straps may be connected as shown, or otherwise arranged to be lsuspended from the saddle.
H is a spur, secured in aplate, I, which is, by the `screw a, or by any other pin, pivoted to the under side of the sole-plate A, as shown. lt can be swung out, asin iig. l, when to be used, and may be. folded under the sole-plate when not to'be used.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as` new, and desire to secure by .Letters Patent, is-
l.. A stirrup consisting of the sole and heel-plates A and C, and provided with the toecap B, and with a counter, b, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. Making the stirrup extensible, to adapt it to feetof different length, as set forth, by arranging the heel-plate adj ustably on the soleolate, as specied.
3. The ring Gand pin f, formed on-the stirrnp, when arranged on the stirrup, to allow the same to be swivelled in the straps D E, of. which one -lras tho ring F to fit on G, substantially as herein shown and described.
Vitnessesz CHAS. R. VAN OSDEL.
