TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I V
Be it known that we, OLivEn PERRY, 1YILLIIIDJN. fl-muss, and CLARK PERRY, of Ortou ille, in the county of Oakland, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheep-Shearing Tables; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation.
Figure 2, an end view.
Our invention consists in the construction of a table whereon the sheep are placed and sheared in a short space of time, and whereby the wool is collected without becoming admixed with foreign substances. This table is usually constructed about three. feet in height, with its top about four feet in width, but we do not wish to be understood confining ourselves to any particular size.
In the'annexcd drawings, A is the top of the table, whichissupportcdby four or more uprights a a, with cross and side braces I) b. The braces a a are placed at an angle from the top A, so that a suitable and substantial base is formed for the table. At each side of the table A are pivoted near its end two swinging frames cl cl, having slanting tops B B, which are adjusted to the main top A by means of cords g g, and operated by the treadle C. This treadle is pivoted to the lower part of one of the stays, c, and extends across to the front of the frame, where there is a ratchet, :c, placed in a vertical position on the opposite stay, 0. It will be seen that the trcadle passes over the cord 5/, which is attached to one of the centre stays (Z of the swingingframes, and when said treadlc is brought down and caught into the ratchet the two tops B B are flush against the sides of the top A, and form the table upon which the sheep are to be placed. The tops A B B are made slightly concave in their centres to conform to the shape of the sheep and to more effectually secure them thereon. The sheep to be sheared is placed upon the table with its hendnnd fore feet under the strap z', and with hind feet secured in the loops m '11, when its feet, belly, and neck are sheared and the wool caught in a bag at the side of the table. The sheep is then turned and sheared upon its side. After shearing these portions, the treadle is uncaught from the ratchet and the frames (Z d allowed to swing apart from the top A as seen in red lines fig. 1, when the sheep is turned with its back up and feet between the frames, with head under the loop 2'; the back is then sheared and wool caughtns before, when the frames are allowed to separate and the sheep taken from the table. This invention secures the sheep in such a manner as to allow the operator to perform his work in less time, and to do it more cifectuallythan it has heretofore been accomplished.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination and arrangement of the table A, swinging frames 13 B, rope y, and trcadle C, all constructed and operating in the manner substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 23d day of February, 1867. OLIVER PERRY, [In 'M. N. WELLES, [In Witnesses: CLARK PER-RY, [L. I'IIRAM BALL,
SILvnsTnR WELLES.
