SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,764, dated July 14:, 1896. Application filed May 7, 1896. Serial No. 590.621- (Nn model.)

To all 1071,0711 it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUIS GRANER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Divided Skirts, of which the follow ing is a specification and description.

The object of this invention is to provide an improvement in what are known as bifurcated or divided skirts heretofore made, which, in their arrangement, are intended to cover the division of the skirt, but which, nevertheless, when in use, either in walking or riding, present an ungraceful and immodest appearance, because the division of the skirt is not properly concealed, and, furthermore, because the contour of the wearers limbs is too easily visible, the object of the present invention being to obviate these obj ections.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front perspective view of my improved skirt in use by a rider. Fig. 2 represents a front perspective view of my skirt adapted for walking. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2 on the line 3 Fig. iis apattern of one of the legs or parts of my skirt.

In the accompanying drawings similar letters refer to corresponding parts in the various figures.

A and A show the front part of each division of the skirt. To each of these divisions A and A, and either cut in one piece with the cloth composing said divisions A and A, or otherwise attached thereto, are plaits b, b, c, and c, said plaits being of any sufficient number, which plaits are stitched down firmly to each other, as shown by G, H, I, and J in I i g. 3, said plaits being provided for the purpose of stiffening or reinforcing the garment at the front, and are arranged to project normally beyond the outline described by each individual leg portion, and to meet at the front of the garment, so as to produce the appearance of an ordinary skirt.

The two parts A and A are joined from the waistband I to the point E by sewing together or otherwise fastening the plaits b and 0''. Between the point E and the bottom of the skirt the plaits 7) and a run parallel and meet, but are not permanently joined to each other, thus forming a skirt with two parts or legs, the separation commencing at the point E, As a result of this construction, the interior circumference B and l) of each of the parts of the skirt, respectively, is reduced. The plaits I), Z), c, and (1' being firmly stitched together, and being upon the front of the skirt, will fall upon the upper part and front of the limbs of the wearer when riding, and the two divisions of the skirt will. be kept d own, thus avoiding any unseemly exhibition of the action of the limbs of the wearer while in motion, and obviating the too wide separation of the parts of the skirt, and preventing the immodest appearance of the wearer presented when the parts of the ordinary divided skirt are too widely separated, sufiicient room only being left in this improved skirt for the necessary parts of the wheel to'project through the garment.

To the plaits h and c are attached. straps i and i, provided with buttons and buttonholes or other fastening devices from the point E to the bottom of the skirt, by means of which the parts of the skirt can be connected, so as to present aclosed skirt front while the skirt is being used for walking. \Vhile in use for riding purposes these straps must, of course, be loosened.

Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is as follows:

1. A garment for the purposes described, comprising at waist or body portion and leg portions, suspended from said body portion, each provided at its inner side near the front with a plurality of plaits secured upon each other, and their respective leg portions, and projecting normally beyond the outline described by each of said leg portions, and meeting at the front of the garment, and means for holding the aforesaid leg portions united at the plaits, substantially as specified.

2. A garment for the purposes described, comprising a waist or body portion, and leg portions suspended from said waist or body portion, provided at their adjacent inner sides, near the front of the garment, with a whereby the leg portions may be held united plurality of superposed plaits secured to each at the front of the garment, substantially as other, and their respective leg portions, and specified.
