CRIB ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.

Be it known th at I, WILLIAM H. DOUGHTY, of Brooklyn, in the'county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Crib Attachment for Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide asuperior crib which may be attached to a bed and which will serve t0 support a child alongside of the bed.

The invention consists of certain peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter, and finally embodied in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is aperspective view of myinvention, showing it applied to the side rail of a bed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the invention. Fig. 3 is a similar section, showing the crib detached from the bed and folded; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary inner side elevation.

To the inner side of the bed-rail 5 are secured vertical cleats 6 by means of the usual slat-supporting rails 7 and screws 8. The lower ends of the cleats 6 proj ect below the side rail 5 and are formed with openings receiving the reduced and horizontally-extending terminals 9 of the outwardly and upwardly running braces 10. The braces 10 are two in number, one for each cleat 6, and have perpendicularly-projected studs 11 formed at their upper ends, said studs being passed through openings in the horizontal plates 12, one for each of the cleats 6, and havingheads 13, adapted to pass through openings 14 in the cleats, the heads locking with the cleats 6, so as to hold the plates 12 in a horizontal position. The upper ends of the cleats 6 are bent outwardly and horizontally to form hooks 15, adapted to engage the upper side of the bot- .tom portion 16 of the crib proper, said bottom portion resting on the plates`12. The bottom portion is provided with two transverse cleats 16a, arranged over the plates 12, and having recesses receiving the studs 11 of the braces 10.

The outer side rail 17 of the crib is hinged to the outer edge of the bottom 16, and the end rails 18 are respectively hinged to the ends of the side rail 17. The inner edge of the bottom 16 at each end is provided with a hook 19 respectively capable of connection with eyes 20, carried by the respective end rails 18. By these means the parts may be held in an extended position.

The lower edge of each end rail 18 is provided with an inwardly-extending cleat 21,'

said cleats being adapted to support the respective end edges of the bottom 16; and the lower edge of the side rail 17 is provided with a similar cleat 23, adapted to support the outer edgev of the bottom 16 when said bottom is moved to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4L.

Secured to the inner side of each end rail 1S and near the inner edges thereof are the respective blocks 24, which have inclined upper sides and are arranged at the lower portions of the said inner edges of the end rails 18, so that the bottom 16, on' its downward movement, will move by these inclined edges and engage under the blocks 24, so as to be snugly held in place.

It will be seen that by this construction the crib may be held rigidly at the side of the bed and that when desired the parts may be disconnected and the crib folded, as shown in Fig. 3. The braces l0 and plates 12 may be also disconnected from the cleats 6, the cleats alone remaining in rigid connection with the bed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described, the device having two cleats capable of being secured to the side rail of the bed, each cleat having a hook at its upper portion, a brace connected to the lower portion of each cleat, the braces extending upwardly from said lower portions, two plates respectively connected with the upper portions of the cleats, the plates being respectively supported by the braces, and a crib having bottom and side portions, the bottom being capable of engaging the hooks and of resting on the plates, substantially as described.

2. A device of the class described, the device having two cleats capable of being connected to the side rail of a bed, each cleat having a vertically-extending slot in its npper portion and also having a hook at said upper portion and an opening at its lower portion, a brace for each cleat, each brace having a reduced portion at each end,the lower reduced portion of the braces respectively fitting in the openings of the cleats, and two plates each having an opening receiving the reduced portions at the upper ends of the braces lo and the inner ends of the plates each having a fiat head capable of locking in the slots of the cleats, substantially as described.
