COMBINED BABY-JUMPER AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,908, dated June 9, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. MUNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Baby- .lumper, Chair, Crib, Hammock, and Carriage-Body, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in baby-j um pers, and particularly to a combined baby-jumper and chair, the parts of which may be so adjusted as to render it capable of use as a crib, an invalids chair, or hammock, and which may be also arranged to serve as a carriage-body for attachment to the springs and framework of an ordinary baby-carriage. Inits use as al1ammock,invalids chair, babyjuinper, or crib it is capable of a vertical springing motion as well as a lateral swing.
The object of my invention is to provide a single article of furniture which by certain manipulations can be converted into any one of the various articles above referred to, as well as to provide a device which may be readily folded up and packed in a small space.
The invention consists, broadly, of a babyjumper composed of a number of sections adapted to fold one within the other and onpable of adj ustmont to various angles and relations one to another, whereby said article is capable of the variety of uses mentioned.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the baby-j umper used as a chair. Fig. 2 is a view showing my invention as forming a crib when changed from the position assumed by the parts when used as a babyjuinper. Fig. 3 is a detail of one of the cor ner-irons, and Fig. 4 is a detail of the leg-securing device. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my invention complete when adapted to be used as a baby-juniper.
Referring to the drawings, the frame of my improved baby-jumper consists of a seat portion, a back portion pivotally secured thereto, and a foot portion, also pivotally secured thereto and adapted to be adjusted with respect to each other. The seat portion consists of the side pieces A A and the crossof these an gle-pieces is formed with a loop (Z- and a hooked projection c for the reception of the upper end of a leg G, which has a notch f formed in one side of it for the reception of a cam E, pivoted to said angle-piece, which cam holds the leg firmly in position, the legs, with the foot-piece, hereinafter described, affording a support for the seat when the ap paratus is used as a chair. The rear end of said an gle-iron is formed with a horizontallyprojecting lug, adapted to fit a slot formed in the lower end of the angle-irons F, which secure together the sides G and cross-piece ll. of the back piece of the apparatus shown at l.
The particular connection between the side pieces G and the side pieces A, as above shown, consists of the slot h and a nut-andbolt connection, which latter consists of the washer 1', having two lugs adapted to lit the slot 9 and prevent said washer from turning, and having a recess j, in which the nut on the end of the bolt is countersunk when in position. The shank of the bolt adjacent the head is squared to receive the thumb-wheel m, by means of which the parts are loosened or tightened as desired. The upper ends of the angle-irons h are provided with enlarged heads having slots to receive lugs formed upon the ends of angle-irons K, which are socured to the piece L, forming a top for the back piece of the device, this top being hinged to the back piece by means of the slots and lugs referred to. Said hinged piece is adapted to be secured in its closed position by means of hooks n, pivoted to the side pieces G and adapted to engage eyes 0, formed in lugs 1), projecting from the angle-irons K down through the hinged top. This hinged piece, it will be seen, may be readily removed by detaching the hooks from the eyes and raising the lugs out of the slots.
In order to suspend the device to adapt it for use as a suspended baby-jumper, hammock, or invalids chair, I provide the side pieces G with ears q, and also the side pieces I with ears 1", and secure to the ears vq respectively, upon either side of the apparatus, bails 8, having eyes at their upper ends, between which eyes extends a crossbar t, having a central eye, which is adapted to be suspended from a spring-support M in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a chain having removable links with hooked ends adapted to be removably secured together. The cars are formed with a substantially triangular slot to give room for the passage of the end of a strap for holding the infant on the seat without said strap interfering with the proper attachment of the bails. The ears q are of similar construction in case it is desired to use a strap across the breast of the infant when the apparatus is used as a crib or invalid-hammock. The foot portion is composed of the side pieces 0, the rear crosspiece P, and the bottom cross-piece Q, the side pieces 0 having segmental portions overlapping the side pieces A of the seat portion, said side pieces 0 having slots g and being pivotally and adj ustably secured to the side pieces A in the same manner that the back portion is secured to the seat portion. Angleirons, as in the former cases, are used for securing the bottom, side, and back pieces of the foot portion together, and the upper ends of said angle-irons (herein shown at u) are provided with lugs adapted to fit in and be pivoted to slots in the forward ends of the angle-pieces a, the curved slots and screwbolt acting to guide said foot portion and to secure it in positions to which it may be adjusted.
To use the device as a baby-juniper, the parts are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1 and suspended from the spring-support. When adapted to be used as a chair, it may be released from the spring-support, when the legs and foot portion act to keep it steady on the floor.
IVhen it is desired to use the device as a crib, an invalids chair, or hammock, either suspended or not, all that is necessary to do is to loosen the fastening devices 9 and swing the head and foot portions on their pivots until they are either in a straight line or at any desired angle with the seat portion,when the nuts are tightened.
\Vhen it is desired to use the apparatus as a carriage-body, the parts may be adjusted to the position desired, and by means of a bolt washer to receive the bolt having lugs fitting in the slots of the side pieces of the seat portion and having a recess to receive the nut upon the end of the bolt, and a thumb-piece for adjusting said bolt; substantially as described.

The herein described baby jumper, chair and crib comprising a central seat portion asAA B provided with slotted side pieces having curved slots, a back portion I having 'side pieces with segmental portions overlapping the side pieces of the central portion, said back portion being pivoted to the seat portion, a bolt passing through said side pieces of both rear and seat portions, awasher to re ceive the bolt, having lugs fitting in the slots of the side pieces of the seat portion and havin g a recess to receive the nut upon the end of the bolt, and a thumb-piece for adjusting said bolt, a foot portion also having slotted side pieces with bolts passing through the I side pieces of the seat portion engaging the slots in the side pieces of the foot portion, said foot portion being pivoted to the seat portion, and adapted when lowered to form a front support for said seat portion, and removably secured to the rear of said seat portion; substantially as described.
3. In the herein-described baby-jumper, a seat portion including an angle-iron provided with a loop and a hooked lug, a leg havinga notched upper end fitting within said loop and beneath the lug, and a cam pivoted to said angle-iron and adapted to engage the notch in the upper part of the leg; substantially as described.
