To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, WALTON DUANE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sample-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in sample-holders.

The object of the present invention is to provide a new and useful sample-holder such as is employed for fastening or temporarily attaching samples to boxes, drawers, or the like which contain or hold duplicates of the sample exhibited; and in the accomplishment of this object the invention contemplates a device that shall not only be simple and inexpensive, but at the same time capable of securely and removably holding in position on the exterior of a box or the like samples of small wares, such as articles of hardware, harness, furniture-fixtures, &c.

With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end View of a box, showing the herein-described sampleholder affixed thereto and holding in position an article of hardware. Fig. 2 is an elevation, of the obverse side of a sample-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the reverse or gummed side of the holder. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View on the line 4. 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a double form of the holder such as is employed for attaching long or heavy samples to the outside of a box or the like.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a flexible adhesive paster that is made of any suitable flexible material and is out in any desired shape or form. The said flexible paster 1 is provided with a plain attaching side 2, that is flat throughout its entire area and is'coated with gum or other suitable adhesive material which when dampened will adhere to any object to which the paster may be attached and when dried provides means for securely fastening the paster-body at all of its edges on the exterior of the box or other receptacle that contains goods or wares, a sample of which is ordinarily exhibited on the outside of said box or receptacle.

The flexible paster 1 is preferably strengthened at a central point by a reinforcing piece 3, that is usually made of the same material as the paster-body and is gummed or otherwise suitably secured to the ungummed side of the paster-body. The reinforcing piece 3 strengthens the paster body at the point Where the metallic fastening-clip 4: is arranged. The metallic fastening-clip 4 consists of a short narrow plate of sheet metal placed flat against the reinforcing piece 3 and provided at its extremities with the securing tongues 5, that are passed through the reinforcing piece and the paster-body and are bent flat against the plain attaching side 2 of the paster-body to provide for permanetly securing the fastening-clip t0 the ungummed side of the paster-body.

The metallic fastening-clip 4, that is secured to the ungummed side of the pasterbody, provides means for fastening in position the flexible tie 6, which may be of a suitable length of tape, cord, or wire. The flexible tie 6 passes between the clip 4 and the paster-body and is securely held by said fastening-clip at an intermediate point, thereby leaving both ends of the tie free to be tied over the sample to be exhibited. After the flexible paster-body has been gummed to a box or the like, as already described, it is simply necessary to tie the free ends of said tie around the ware or article to provide for firmly and securely holding such Ware or article in position, while at the same time allowing the Ware or article to be easily removed and replaced, as will be readily understood.

As described, the flexible paster-body may be made of any suitable flexible material and may be cut in any desired shape or form,

thereby being susceptible to such modifications as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In this figure of the drawings the pasterbody is illustrated as being of an elongated shape and provided with a double set of tiestrings loeated, respectively, near the ends thereof, and thereby providing a construetion of sample-holder especially adapted for 1. A sample holder consisting of a flexible pastel, the body of which is provided with a plain attaching side flat throughout its entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating, and a short metal plate arranged on the ungumined side of the paster body and having its ends secured therein, said metal plate embracing the flexible tie at an intermediate point between, its ends thereby leaving both ends of the tie free to be tied around an object, substantially as set forth.

A sample holder consisting of a flexible paster, the body of which is provided with a plain attaching side, flat throughout its entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating, aflexible tie, and anarrowmetallic fastening clip plate arranged flat against the un gui nm ed side of the pastel body over the flexible tie at a point intermediate of its ends, said clip being provided at its extremities with securing tongues passed through the pastor body and bent flat against the-plain atta'chin side thereof, substantially as set forth.
