To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES P. TOLMAN, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Twine-Packages, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the packaging of twine and is more especially adapted to the packaging of glazed twine where the package is not on a spool with flanges to protect the ends of the package. Glazed twine is given a smooth glazed finish in its manufacture and as a result when wound into a package for sale the several layers are apt to slip off from one another especially after a portion of the twine has been unwound. As a result the twine is apt to become tangled and the package not only becomes unsightly, but waste of material is occasioned. My invention is intended to overcome this difficulty and comprises a package in which the twine is caught or stuck by paste or the like at different points along its entire length in such manner that under ordinary conditions it will be held in place, but may be unwound on a very slight pull. In the forms of packages shown in the drawings this is accomplished by applying a coat of paste to one or both ends of the package so that the paste will permeate the spaces be tween the layers of twine and when dry attach them lightly together the end of the package comprising what may be termed a wall built up of twine and paste, the paste serving merely to connect the ends of the several layers together. A very slight pull on the twine will free it.

In the drawings l have shown several forms of package in each of which my invention is embodied, but I do not mean to limit the application of my invention to the forms shown nor to glazed twine alone.

paste appliedto its end, C being the tube on which twine is sometimes wound. Any ordinary paste such as commercial size or starch or flour paste may be used, and it may be applied by an ordinary paste brush, a single application of the brush full of paste to each end of the package giving a sufficient coating to the ends of the package to cause the layers of twine to adhere. In some cases where the character of the glaze on the twine permits it, the wetting of the ends of the package will dissolve the glaze sufficiently so that the glaze of one layer will merge with the glaze on the next and when dry the layers will adhere to each other at the ends of the package. Of course but little adhesion between the layers of twine will be necessary, only suflicient to prevent them from falling apart under ordinary usage and until they are pulled apart when a supply is being drawn off the package for use.

By ordinary usage I refer to the fact that the package when broken for use is some times mounted on a spindle on which it rotates as the twine is drawn 01?, sometimes placed in a receptacle or cagelike structure which holds it in place, and sometimes thrown loosely in a drawer from which the end of the package hangs. In any of these cases the package is kept intact by the paste so that the twine will not fall off from it, but will be drawn ofi' layer by layer as its use may require. When the paste is dry the various layers will be held together sulliciently firmly for the purpose referred to.

What I claim as my invention is A cross-wound package of non-cohering or glazed twine the several turns or layers of which are caught together at separated points by a superficial coating of adhesive material applied to one or both ends of said package.
