H R. H. FANOOURT. POCKET CASE FOR GIGARETIES, &c.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrtcn.
ill.('ll:\ltIl-ll. FANtOllt", OF \VAVERIJY, NEW SOU"H \VALE S.
ROCKET-CASE FR,o|cARE TEs,&c;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,544, dated June 4,1895.
A plichtion filed December 2C, 1894.- Serial No. 532,45'7- (No model.) T
1'0 11H t-lmml 116 may uonccrnlie it known that LRICHA'R'! )TRY FAN- CoURT, tobaccomanufacturer; lsubject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Wa- .\-'erly,noar Sydney, in the British Colony of Ne'wSoutn Wales, have invented a neunand, useful Improved Box or Pocket-Case for (Jigare'ttcs, Cigars, and Such-Shaped Goods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box or pocket case'or holder speciail'y devised for vending cigarettes although it will be found equally useful for holding cigars and goods partaking vof the shape of cigarettes'and cigars. Though it is intended to manufacture this improved box or pocket holder of cardboard, strawboard, stiff leather or the like, yet other niatcrial as metal or anything suitable might be used for the purpos p This improved box or pooket'case to r oi garettes, cigars and such shaped goods has three distinct. and peculiar features which preterably are used in combination although two of them may be separately used in other combinatiohsgoing to make up similar articles. 'Iliicsedistiuctand peculiar features are, first, folding or hinged flaps on the cud-say the top-ot two meetinghalves of the box or case, one o't' which takes over the contents of its half case, while the other laps over the whole end. or top and portion turns in behind the first mentioned flap. The second peculiar feature is the insertion of partially criluped bands, the crimpcd part of which forms rests in place during m1mufacturo.
for the cigarcttt-s, cigars, the, while the plain part turnsovorand retains the said cigarettes, cigars, dc, in such resting places. The third pecniiar feature is the making of the box or case of one piece c 1.xt,punchcd or stamped into partitnilar shape.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood reference will now be made to the drawings herewith, inwhich- Figure l is a pcrspcctive vicw of a filled cigarette-box constructed according to this invention. laig. 2 is a plan of the cut, punched, or stamped blank with the 'rctaining-baiuls l igs. Z! and l are transverse sections through a retaining band and away from 'the bands, respectively, while Fig. 'is a'longitu'dinal' section ot'tho box or case complete and closed.
The material is cut, punched or stamped ,into shape-and then'scored or marked (as in-' cheated by dotted lines) as shown in Fig. 2.
a are longitudinal scorings or marks the outsides a of which forn1--the sides of each half of the box or case whenthey are turned up at right angles. The scorings I) leave the ends Z) which are also tnrncdat right angles the angle pieces b taking inside the sides a to which they are gnmmed or otherwise fastened leaving the box or case with two distinct halveswhich hinge upon scoring or mark 0. The scoring (I has therein the cut or slot rl'and this end has a second scoring d at a distance frbln the first equal to the width of the contents of the half case or box so that the part d =will form the top of one halt' ot said box or casetand the lap piece (1 will turn over the contents as shown in Fig. 5, At the other end of the box or case are scorings c and c the piece of being the width of the full contents so that such piece e on being turned on the scorings or marks will form the top of the box and the lap piece .9 will form a fastening by beinginserted in cut or slot (1' with the sides of each half box or case meeting at their edges completing the whole. The crimped bands have scorings or marks so that the half box and a turnover-f to take over the crimps f forming rests for the cigarettes and a tnrn-in f for again fastening to the side of the half box the band being further fastened to the opposite side atf just before the turnover. The cigarettes say with a number of spills or inouthpieces are placed in the box or case before the final fastening of the retaining bands.
It will be easily seen that the folding or hinged flaps (forming first the end or top of one half case or box and then an overlapping end or topof thewholc case 0 box) might be used in a similarly constructed box or case which, instead-of being nladc of one piece or blank, has two halves hinged together in the center. It will be further understood that there will he turns f to fasten to the sides of 17 the=erimped retaining bands might-besused in similarly constructed boxes or casesirnade with one instead ofnvith two. receptacles or halves and whether or not the box or case 5 is made oi one piece or blank or has two hinged parts or its cover hinged or otherwise fixed on it. Having now particnlarlydescribed and explained the nature of my said invention and 1c in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that whatI claim isy 1. Apocketbox or case for cigarettes and similar shaped articles, consisting of two flexihly connected half boxes or cases each' con-' i r 5 taining a crimpedband to receive the cigarcites or other articles, and each having at its outer end a. folding flap, one flap having in juxtaposition to its base an incision or slot to receive the extremity of the other folding 2o flap, substautially as described.
2. A pocket-box or case, consisting of two flexibly connected or jointed half boxes or cases each provided with. a band having a plurality of crimps .to receive the cigarettes 25 or other articles, and a plain end portion for folding over the cigarettes or other articles lying in the crimped portion, and adapted to be secured 'at its extremity to the half box or case to hold or retain the cigarettes or othcrarticles in the whim tially as described.
3. A pocket-box or case for cigarettes and similar shaped articles, consisting of two flexibly connected or jointed half boxes or cases each provided with an attached band having 5 a plurality of crimps to receive the cigarettes or similarly shaped articles, and a plain end portion constituting a continuation of the crimped portion for folding over the cigarettes or otherarticles lying in the crimped portion, substantially as and for the'pnrposes of the band, substau- 3a described.
4. A pocket-box or case forcigarettes and similar shaped articles,cousisting of two flexibly connected half boxes or cases each cdn- 5 taining a band having a plurality of crimps, and a plain end portion forming a continuation of the crimped portion and each also having at its outer end a folding flap to cover the outer end of the contents thereof, one Hop 50 having in juxtaposition to its base means for engaging the other flap, substantially as described.
