This invention relates to boxes and particularly to foldable containers for holding pies, cakes and any other adaptable commodity.
It is an object of this invention to produce a box of the character indicated requiring a comparatively small amount of stock for forming the box and creating a commodity holder suitably encased which will serve to hold square or round articles of merchandise. In other words, the holder may be formed substantially square or it may be held in place when formed in a circle.
It is a further object of this inventionto provide novel means whereby the commodity holder comprises one side of the box, other parts of the blank being shaped to form the bottom, ends and cover or top of the said box, the said device including novel means by which the parts of the box are held in assembled relation to one another.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a liox embodying one form of the invention;
1 blank partially folded;
Figure 3 illustrates a sectional view of the.
box in its completed state;
Figure 4 illustrates a perspective view of a fragment of the box;
Figure 5 illustrates a perspective view of a box of modified construction;
from which the box is formed; and
Figure 7 illustrates a perspective view of a fragment of the said box showing the parts partially assembled.
In these drawings 10 denotes the bottom of the box; 11 and 12 the ends thereof; 13 and 14 sections of the cover or top, whereas the parts 15 and 16 of the blank from which the re 2 illustrates a plan view of the bottom, ends and sections of the, cover are formed comprise the holder for the commodity to prevent its shiftin and it also forms or constitutes the sides 0 the box.
The parts 15 and 16 each has slots 17and 18 and a tongue 19, the tongues of the said parts being on opposite ends of said parts.
he cover sections 13 and 14 are rovidd with circular recesses or they may e otherwise shaped so that when the cover sections are assembled, an opening is formed in the top of the box through which the contents thereof are visible and it is the purpose of the inventors that the said opening shall be guarded by a transparent or semitransparent ller, such as paper or other transparent substitute now commonly employed. The cover section 13 has oppositely disposed slots 20 and 21 which result in the formation of tongues 22 and 23 and the said cover section also has extensions 24 and 25, each having a tongue such as 26.
The cover section 14 is provided with tongues 27 and 28 which are intended to enter the slots 20 and 21 respectively when the cover sections are folded to form the topof the box and these tongues which engage the cover section 13 serve to hold the sections of the cover in place as is shown in Figure 1.
The tongues 26 of the extensions 24 and coact with the parts 15 and 16 for holding the cover section 13 in assembled relation to the commodity holder when the parts 15 and 16 are assembled with relation to each other, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, it being shown that the parts 15 and 16 eachhas a transversely disposed slot 29 which becomes vertically disposed when the parts of the holder are assembled. Each part 15 is in- ,te ral wth th bottom 10 h t 30 d Figure 6 illustrates a plan view of the blank g 1 e as 5 Own a an 'the. parts are hinged so that they may assume positions at right angles to the bottom while they-.,are connected to the bottom.
angles to the bottom, they may be bent into a circle and the tongue of one part is inserted in a slot 17 or 18 of the other part, according to the diameter of the holder desired.
As seen inFigures 1 and 4, the extensions When the parts 15 and 16 are at right 24 and 25 are intended to be folded downwardly over the outer surfaces of the parts 15 and 16 respectively, with their tongues inserted through one of the slots 29 of the v part 15 or 16 with which it cooperates.
By reason of the interlocking connections I thus provided, one cover section is positively anchored to the parts 15 and 16 and the other cover section is secured to the first tongue and slot arrangement described.
In view of the fact that the provision of windows by the employment of transparent paper is well known, it is believed unnecessary to illustrate the transparent window to be employed in association with the cover sections just described.
In that form of the invention shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, the cover is without a window. In this form of the invention, the bottom of the box is identified by the numeral 31. The blank is also intended to include ends 32 and 33 and a top or cover sections 34 and 35.
25 The parts 36 and 37 which are shaped to form the holder under the cover or top have the characteristics of the parts and 16 heretofore described, in that each part has longitudinally extending slots 38 and 39, a vertical slot 40 and a tongue 41. The tongue of the part 36 is on the end opposite that of the part 37. When the blank is to be folded to form a container, a holder or commodity retainer, the parts 36 and 37 are bent to a position at right angles to the bottom and then shaped to form a square or rectangular closure or a round closure with the ends of the part 36 overlapping the ends of the parts 37, in which position they are secured together 40 by the insertion of a tongue 41 one member 1 into one of the slots 38 or 39 of the other member according to whether the container is to be square or round.
The cover section 34 has a locking joint 42 which coacts with a locking joint 43 on the cover section 35. The section 35 has extensions 44 and 45 with tongues 46 and 47 respectively which are intended to be applied to the slots 40 of the parts 36 and 37 respectively, it being shown that the extensions 44 and 45 are folded over the sides of the said parts 36 and 37 whereby the tongues may be applied to the said slots and when this is done, the assembled box is held closed.
The parts 36 and 37 are integral with the bottom and the connection between the parts and the said bottom constitute a hinge by which the said parts are held in proper relation to the bottom of the box.
It will be apparent that a. box made in accordance with the foregoing disclosure will be held closed by the fastenings described and that tying of the box after it is assembled will not be necessary.
\Ve claim:
mentioned cover section by the interlocking 1. A folding box comprising a blank having a bottom, end sections and cover sections, a commodity holder integral with the bottom and comprisinglongitudinallyextendingparts adapted to be folded at right angles to the bottom, interengaging connections on the said parts whereby one part is secured to the other part, the interengaging elements of said parts being adjustable whereby the said parts may be secured when shaped to form a circular or square commodity holder, means b which one of the cover sections is secured to the said parts, and means by which the other cover section is secured to the section anchored to the said parts.
2. A folding box comprising a blank having a bottom, end sections and cover sections, a commodity holder integral with the bottom and comprising longitudinally extending parts, interengaging connections on the said parts whereby one part is secured to the other, the said means being adjustable where by the parts are secured when shaped to form a round or square commodity holder, and means by which one of the cover sections is secured to said parts, the said cover sections having coinciding recesses forming a window opening in the top of the box when assembled.
